Martyntje “Marty” Ragetlie Obituary
Martyntje (Marty) Ragetlie (nee Stoof)
At 88 years of age in the Peterborough Hospice on September 22 2024 from complications arising from a stroke. Marty was born January 7 1936 in Zaandam, North Holland the youngest of five children. She was predeceased by her sister Eef Hemmelder and brothers Wim, Jan and Leen. Marty lived most recently at the Regency Retirement Home in Lakefield.
Marty leaves a large loving family behind, sons Henri (Diane Chesla), Norman (Kimberly Wingrove), Hans (Margaret Adkins) and Eloise (Bill Julie). Oma was a warm-hearted participant in the lives of her grandchildren Alisha (Aaron) Ashley (Jason), Ben, Joshua (Jenny) Rosalind (Amadou), Sander, Nicholas (Diana), Jacob (Kat), Lucas, Calvin (Marissa) and Cameron and had the good fortune to have fun experiences with six great-grandchildren. She is mourned by the mothers of six of her grandchildren Susan Parker and Gail Argentino.
Marty was pre-deceased by her husband Harry Ragetlie who she missed deeply these past 12 years. Harry and Marty immigrated to Canada in 1957 and married here. They embraced their new home and raised their children in Burlington and Guelph. Participation in community life was important to them. They made efforts to make the world a better place and took on Canadian citizenship with pride. Their lives were full and lived in good spirit. They went to Expo 1967 with their sons and a newborn daughter and to Montreal for the Olympics and on the eve of the Quebec referendum went to demonstrate their belief in an inclusive Canada. They planted flowers and trees to commemorate the Canadian liberation of Holland. They travelled coast to coast. Spent many Sunday afternoons hiking the Niagara Escarpment, had camping adventures and took multiple European trips. Their DIY approach saw them through numerous projects and Marty’s Icelandic wool sweaters were emblematic of that. They showed a zest for life, were volunteers, welcomed many into their home, took on new traditions with open hearts, were tolerant and had a great appreciation for art, culture and the beauty of the natural world. This was evident in Marty’s extensive gardens. Marty had a deft touch for arranging flowers and contributed these talents for several faith communities over the years. Marty enjoyed choral and classical music attending concerts and sang in her church choir. The sounds of CBC radio were a steady accompaniment in her home over the decades.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to UNICEF Canada at www.unicef.ca. Marty and her siblings survived the “hunger winter” as children coming through the 2nd World War. She strongly felt the injustice of children in other parts of the world going hungry, particularly in famines following war.
Marty’s remains will be interred next to her husband at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Guelph. Following a private family service an open reception will be held at HARCOURT MEMORIAL CHURCH 87 Dean Ave., Guelph on Saturday October 12 from 2:30 to 4:30 PM.
