In Loving Memory of Fred Bertram
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the passing of Frederick (Fred) Bertram, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, who left us peacefully on February 27th, 2024. Although his departure leaves a void in our lives, his memory will be forever etched in our hearts.
Fred was born in Calgary, Alberta on January 19th 1935, and was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Elizabeth (Treiber) Bertram, and his brother, David Bertram Sr.
Fred shared an enduring bond with the love of his life, Loraine. Their marriage of over 65 years was a testament to commitment through life’s joys and challenges. Their love story was one of devotion, humour, and unwavering companionship.
He leaves behind a lasting legacy through his children, Connie, Russ (Kathy), and Todd (Erin), his grandchildren Sara (Jason), Jeffrey (Cassidy), Mya (Brian), Jessica (Mitchell), Michael, and Erik, and his great-grandson, Ryder. Fred, known fondly by many as “Bup Bup”, was a source of endless love and wisdom, creating everlasting bonds with his family who loved him dearly.
Fred was a man of many passions and talents. His handsome smile, lighthearted chuckle, and presence brought joy to all who knew him. He was skilled at wood working, creating beautiful pieces that will be cherished for generations to come. There seemed to be nothing he couldn’t fix, a true Mr Fix-It. A lover of simple pleasures, Fred could be found enjoying a cold Blue or a glass of scotch on the deck at their home overlooking Paudash Lake, singing along to Johnny Cash or Waylon Jennings. He was also known to play a tune on his harmonica, to his grandchildren’s delight.
His fondest memories would include summers with a circle of friends and family on Mortimer’s Point at Lake Muskoka, winters spent at Lake Seminole Resort in Florida where he served on the Board of Directors and was a rod and reel carrying member of the “Happy Hookers”. He enjoyed seeing his children and grandchildren branch out from their original cottage on Paudash Lake, to their own cottages and homes, separated only by a short walk or boat ride. Time spent at the lake together will forever be a cherished memory.
Though he may no longer walk among us, Fred’s good natured spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love. May he rest in peace, knowing he was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
Special thanks to the staff at Fairhaven Home, who would never fail to mention his big smile, for all the love and care they provided for Fred during his time there. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to follow.
