Dr. Peter Emblidge Bohm passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 16th, 2024 at West Parry Sound Health Centre with daughters by his side, at the age of 83. He will be deeply missed by many. Peter was born in Buffalo, New York in 1940. A few years later, the family moved to the country in nearby Clarence Centre, NY where the four Bohm Brothers (Bill, Peter, David and Jim) and parents (Toivo John and Margaret) lived for many years. At Clarence Central High School, Peter met Kathleen Lewis who would become his first loving wife soon after they graduated. He played many sports, including football which became a lifelong passion – especially when the Buffalo Bills were on the field.
From 1962-1968 Peter served four years in the US Air Force, and 2 years on reserve – an incredibly formative time of which he was very proud. He earned Bachelor’s and Masters degrees (Indiana University) and a PhD in Social Work (University of Toronto). After moving to Canada in 1971, he spent many years working at the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto, where he met a colleague Ella Lynne Chalmers who became his second loving wife of 48 years. His career then took him to Beechgrove Child & Family Centre in Kingston ON, and then Parry Sound Child and Family Services. He was also adjunct faculty at York University and Queen’s University.
Over the course of his 83 years, Peter planted countless trees at the various Bohm Homes and created many beautiful vegetable and rock gardens full of life. He often said his most cherished roles were as husband and father. He loved woodworking, fishing, canoeing, camping, exercising, and grilling delicious family dinners. He was an avid fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Canada and a longtime member of the United Church of Canada. He is survived by his daughters Marie Bohm (Rob McCoy), Liz Bohm (Successfully Solo), Erin Bohm (Eli Shostak) and Kara Bohm (Myles Hawkins); granddaughters Delia, and Lisa (Steve Burnham ) and fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbours and colleagues. He served as an example to many to “soldier on” and embrace life’s challenges as best we can.
Cremation arrangements entrusted to the Torrance Funeral Home (89 Bowes St., Parry Sound)
Service to be held on Wednesday October 30th at 2pm, at St. James United Church (24 Mary St, Parry Sound, ON P2A 1C9) with an additional celebration of life to take place at a later date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Muscular Dystrophy Canada and St. James United Church.
