Harald Olaf Tagseth
1930 – 2024
Age 94 years old.
The patriarch of the Tagseth family, Harald Tagseth, took his last breath at the West Parry Sound Health Centre in the early morning of Tuesday, August 20th, 2024. He was surrounded in love by his wife, daughters, and sons in law. Harald’s passing has left his loved ones in a state of profound sadness, already missing his cheerful presence and positive influence.
Harald was born in Bulyea, Saskatchewan at the start of the Great Depression. He was the sixth of seven children and grew up in the love and support of his large family. Harald attended Public School in Leslie, Saskatchewan and graduated with his Grade 12 diploma in 1947. He took the opportunity to travel east to Ontario, and shortly thereafter was hired by Ontario Hydro, his dream job. Life was good.
Harald worked out of northern Ontario, and made his way to the once boom town of Cobalt, where he met and married Irene, the woman who would be the love of his life, mother of his two daughters, and partner for the next 70 years. Harald chose to quit Ontario Hydro in 1955 to be with his young bride when she gave birth to their first daughter. He had to quit his dream job.
Harald then joined the OPP and was transferred to Parry Sound in 1959. With two little girls and a young wife, Harald managed the shift work for a number of years, but ultimately decided on a different career path. He qualified as a Municipal Assessor, and began his new profession, where he would remain, and until he turned 50 when he was finally able to retire.
In his 44 years of retirement, Harald continued to buy and renovate a number of homes; he built one in Parry Sound and another in McKellar. He took particular pride in his self sufficiency, doing nearly all the work himself, and when in need of an extra pair of hands, he had Irene ready to pitch in as needed. They made quite the team.
Harald was blessed with good health, a solid set of family values, and strong work ethic. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Harald enjoyed the time he could spend with all the children, watching his Blue Jays games, and taking care of his property. He was the real deal.
Harald and Irene were able to travel the world together making trips to South America, Australia, and the Middle East. They were lucky enough to win a house in a local lottery, and they spent at least 10 winters in Clearwater, Florida close to Dunedin for the Blue Jays Grapefruit League games Harald loved so much. He was one of the original fans.
Harald lived a long and prosperous life on his own terms, was beholden to no one, and was an exemplary role model to his daughters and all six of his grandchildren. The great grandchildren will have to take everyone’s word for it. His legacy will live on through each of them.
Harald is survived by his wife, Irene (nee Sutherland); daughters Kathryn Tagseth (Waldemar Mucha) and Laura (Ron Zulak); his grand children Arlen Campbell (Jill Palichuk) and their two girls, McKenna and Jessa; Noah Campbell (Melissa) and their son Elliot; Cory Tagseth (Jordyn); Jesse Zulak (Christine) and their children Avery and Jaxon; and Dana McDonald (Erin) and their boys, Harrison and Hayden; and brother in law Edward Sadar. He is also survived by dozens of neices and nephews.
Harald is predeceased by his father, Mathias Tagseth and mother Lydia (Gjesdal); brothers Melvin, Louis (Frances), Edward, and Arthur (Rita), sisters Astrid (John), and Myrtle (Edward), and in March of this year, his oldest grandson, Christian Campbell, only 46 yrs old.
Friends will be received at the Logan Funeral Home, 81 James Street, Parry Sound on Wednesday, August 28th from 12:00 – 1:00 P.M. Funeral Service will take place in the Logan Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, August 28th at 1:00 P.M.
