Patricia “Patt” Duncan
With sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Patricia (Patt) Mary Duncan, (nee Stubbs) on June 11, 2024. Born in 1948 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Patt was the daughter of Helen Stubbs (nee Winogradoff) and Thomas Stubbs. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Tom Stubbs and Russell van Bork.
Patt moved to the Ottawa area in the late 70s with her family, including her former husband, George Duncan, and her two children, Brad Duncan and Janet Malek (nee Duncan). She was also proud to be “Nana Dunc” to her two grandchildren, Sarah and Dylan Malek.
Although Patt struggled in different points of her life, as we all do, she was smart and determined and did not shy away from challenges. She went back to school in her forties to learn carpentry and graduated top of her class. She owned a bowling alley and bar in Carleton Place, Ontario for several years before a car accident required her to take a more “regular” job. Her strong aptitude with numbers led her to a variety of accounting positions.
Outside of work, Patt had two loves: teaching and cards. While raising her children in Munster Hamlet, Ontario, she tutored students who were having trouble in school. She was an avid softball player and taught many young women the strategies of women’s fastpitch. She was also one of the best pitchers around! She was a brilliant card player. It didn’t matter what the game was – she would learn it, master it, and win at it. She was active in the Ottawa bridge scene and quickly earned her Silver Life Master. In her later years, she taught others how to play cards and helped lead card sessions in her seniors’ home.
We want to thank the staff at Robertson House in Bells Corners for the years of care they provided. Patt had many friends there and loved her role as “Resident Ambassador.” Thank you as well to staff at the Ottawa Civic Hospital who cared for Patt before she passed in her sleep from heart failure.
Family members will be holding a private celebration of life for Patt at a later date.
