CLEGG, Muriel (Simpson)
Born Anfield, Liverpool, England, December 10, 1921
Muriel (Simpson) passed away peacefully at 102 years of age! Beloved wife of the late Leonard Clegg for 65 years, loving mother of Colin (Mary) of Halifax, NS, Leon (Carol) of Lac du Bonnet MB, Gillian (Greg) Szabo of Niagara Falls, ON and the late Gordon Clegg of Bristol, England. Beloved grandmother of Julie (Colin) Bernard and Carolyn (Damion) Stapledon of Halifax, Ian Clegg (Joanne) of Winnipeg, David Clegg (Kim) of Calgary, Melissa Letton of Ottawa and Sarah Szabo of Niagara Falls. Great-grandmother to Carys and Van Bernard, Eden and Bodhi Stapledon, Liam and Finlay Clegg and Aubrie Letton.
Muriel was the dear sister of her late Scottish siblings, Gordon Simpson of West Kilbride, Graham Simpson of Pittenweem, and Isobel Girling of Saltcoats.
Muriel and her family emigrated to Canada in 1961, spending 61 years in Niagara Falls where she worked at the General Hospital and United Way. She was actively involved as a volunteer for 20 years with St. John Ambulance, 25 years with Cancer Society, and 20 years on the GNGH Hospital Auxiliary. Muriel was a member of the Royal Canadian Naval Association and the Niagara Falls Lawn Bowling Club.
Fitness and sport were important throughout her life. In high school she was an elite sprinter, selected to compete in the British Empire Games in 1938, in the 100 and 220 yard sprints. Unfortunately, she caught scarlet fever and was unable to take part. She was an inspiration to those around her as she drove herself and exercised at the YWCA, YMCA and the Coronation Centre until she was almost 100 years old.
Muriel lived independently after Len’s death, enjoying coffees with friends, music, singing, everything British, and especially her daily G&T’s and Lay’s chips. Maybe this was her secret to a long life!
She lived her life as she wished and chose her own path until the very end. Muriel will be missed by all of the family and her friends.
Cremation has taken place and Muriel’s family will receive friends at the Morse & Son Event Centre, 5929 Main Street, Niagara Falls on Saturday, March 30th for refreshments and sharing of memories between 2:00-4:30 pm. For those who wish, there will be a celebration of Muriel’s life, previous to the gathering at the Event Centre, from 1:00-2:00pm at Morse & Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls.
In memory of Muriel, donations may be made to Autism Ontario or the Muscular Dystrophy Associations.
