On August 12th, 2024 at 94 years, Paul Chopik of Oshawa passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving family.
Paul is predeceased by his parents Harry and Maria Chopik (nee Plypew), wife and soulmate Earlleen Chopik (nee Conboy), sisters Ann and Rose, brothers in-law Ron and Terry, and special friend Velma Guthrie. Left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy are his three children; Paula Chopik, Randy Chopik (Lynn), and Vincent Chopik (Rhonda), grandchildren; Jami (Andrew), Mike (Marie), Jessie (Tom), Mandy (Adam), and Sammi (Shawn), sister Sylvia McPhee and daughter-in-law Kelly Chopik. Paul’s great grandchildren Sara, Landon, Luke and Josh will also miss him dearly. Paul was also a wonderful uncle to his many nieces and nephews, and a beloved friend and father figure to all who knew him.
Anyone who knew our Dad/GeeGee knew his immense love for hunting, fishing, and simply being out in nature. He spent many summers with his family at Round Lake, and instilled in his sons and grandson Mike a love for the outdoors that they will forever cherish. He never missed his boys’ hockey games, and there wasn’t a prouder Dad/GeeGee to be found in the stands.
His love for travel came a bit later – with five trips to Hawaii with his wife Earlleen, they renewed their vows on the black sand and fell in love with the islands as they fell more in love with each other, having lived a storybook tale of true love that most people can only dream of. When our Mom/Baba passed away in 2009, Velma came into our lives and gave our Dad/GeeGee 10 years of love and happiness we thought he’d never see again.
Dad/Geegee was a man who could fix anything, knew everything there was to know about cars, loved to play poker, and could clear a pool/snooker table without breaking a sweat. After work every day, he would always make time to throw a baseball around outside with his sons or stay up late making sure the backyard ice rink was frozen for the next morning. When it came to his daughter Paula, he was so proud of her accomplishments and loved his girl like no other – he was her number one fan.
After retiring from General Motors following 41 years of service, there was nothing our Dad/GeeGee loved more than sitting in his backyard with a cold beer listening to the radio. The only thing that made this even better was being surrounded by the laughter of his grandchildren and great grandchildren (and his best furry friend, Skylar).
While we will miss his humour, stories, stubbornness and quick wit – what we will miss most is the way he loved and supported us unconditionally – when you had our Dad/GeeGee in your corner, you felt like you could take on the world.
Although we miss him achingly and his loss will be felt within every aspect of our lives, during every milestone and celebration that he would surely be apart of; how lucky we are to have had so many years with such a special person. And what a wonderful life he gave us.
To the man who shaped who we all are – thank you, Dad/GeeGee. We will love and miss you forever.
“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held in the coming weeks for family and close friends.
Our family would also like to send a sincere thank you to the nurses at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville’s ICU – your kindness will never be forgotten.
