It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Michael Patrick Derry at home with his loving family around him, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Linda Margaret Derry (née Gough) and dear father of Mark John (deceased), Michael Paul and his wife Elana, and Julie Anne Brown and her husband Jamie. Predeceased by his father John and mother Mary (nee Palazzo), and proud brother to Johnson (deceased), Lynda, Darlene, Patricia and Joanne. Michael’s four grandchildren – Jackson, Brooklyn, Kyle and Rebecca – were the light of his life. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Michael was born and grew up in Toronto. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in electrical engineering and had a long and successful career at Ontario Hydro and Hydro One, before having his own consulting company.
Michael was a very special person who loved life and all his family and friends. He was happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren and loved making them laugh. He was an enthusiastic traveller and enjoyed many trips and cruises with Linda. We remember him as the ‘fixer’ – he had a talent for finding an innovative and creative solution to any problem, no matter how big or small. He got his love of music and Elvis Presley from his mother, Mary, and it was a highlight when they were able to travel together to Graceland. Michael filled our home with music, energy, joy and love – he will be greatly missed.
We would like to express our thanks to family and his many friends for their incredible support; the physicians, nurses and radiation therapists at Durham Regional Cancer Centre, especially Dr. Zalewski for always giving us hope; and to Mother Jennifer Schick and Father Geoff Lloyd for helping us to be closer to God.
A Memorial Service will take place Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 2:00pm at All Saints Anglican Church, 300 Dundas St. West, Whitby, ON L1N 2L5. Reception to follow. If you wish, donations in Michael’s memory may be made to All Saints Church at www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/20367
