RUTH LAING
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Ruth Irene Laing (nee Jefferson) in her 95th year on September 21, 2024 at Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth.
Predeceased by her husband Robert Laing (1992) and her eldest child Marilyn Zimmer (2011). She will be sadly missed by her daughter Margaret (Jeff) and sons Andrew (Helen), Murray (Viola) and Tom (Christine). Dear grandmother of Scott (Shannon), Erin (Brad), Rob, Lois (Ryan), Latisha, Byron, Jacob (Christena) and Erika and great-grandmother of Joshua, Jamie, Jackson and Bella. Dear step grandmother of Alex, Katelyn, Emma, Darnell, and step great-grandmother of Justin, Summer, Trevor, Tyler and Jaylyn. Also fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was born January 27, 1930 in Fullarton Township and was the third of nine children born to the late John and Jeanette (Nettie) Jefferson. Only her youngest sister Ina and husband Bill Laidlaw, and one sister-in-law Barbara Jefferson, survive. Predeceased by brothers John (Norma) and Norman and by sisters Mary Chessell (Bill), Margaret Cleland (Bruce), Olive Riehl (Don), Eva Laing (Gordon) and Laura LaForge (Charles).
Ruth’s early career was as a teacher but shortly after marrying Bob she left teaching to work together with him to run their dairy farm just west of Cromarty, Ontario. They were faithful members of Cromarty Presbyterian Church and greatly enjoyed attending old time dances and baseball games at the local diamond. After Bob passed away she moved to Mitchell where she was active in the Knox Presbyterian Church choir and WMS group. She also volunteered for the Town of Mitchell Information Booth and the Agricultural Society, and was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels and the Canadian Cancer Society. Eventually Ruth retired to McCarthy Place in Stratford for her remaining years and the family would like to thank the nurses and staff of McCarthy Place and the Home & Community Care Support Services for their support. We would especially like to express our appreciation to Rotary Hospice for the compassionate care mom received from the staff and volunteers during her final days.
The family invites friends and relatives to a visitation at the Lockhart Funeral Home, 109 Montreal St., Mitchell on September 25th from 6-8 pm, or on September 26th from 10-10:45 am immediately prior to the funeral service at 11:00 am. A reception will follow at the Lockhart Reception Centre. Interment in Staffa Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy the family would encourage donations to Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth or the Canadian Cancer Society.
