Valerie (Momma) was a shining light in this world. She was an incredibly loving Mother, Mother-in-law, Wife, Sister, Aunt, “Babushka” and friend.
She touched lives where ever she went. Whether it was on one of her walks around Port Credit, on vacation, at work or at the store – she left a positive imprint everywhere. Valerie loved people and of course her pets. We will miss her wit, her positive spirit, her stories, her smile and that twinkle in her eyes.
Valerie was always a kind and nurturing person, caring for others. Even at a very young age during WWII, she risked her own life to “steal” apples from a farm in order to get food for the younger children in the camps, so they would not go hungry. As she said, it was survival. Like so many, she endured hardship during the war and her lifetime but never became a bitter person, always saw the positive side.
After the war she and her surviving family moved to England. She became a nurse, which she enjoyed doing. Valerie than made the move to Canada. It was in Toronto where she met her husband (my Daddy), Waldo. Although they had a very short time together before his tragic accident, she always talked about what a wonderful man he was and how happy she was to have found true love.
As a young widow, she found the strength to advocate for the need to extend the time period for searches after plane crashes. She went as far as to have a bill passed through government. Valerie also broke the barrier with financial institutions being able to purchase her first property while banks denied loans to many women at the time, especially widows. She worked 12-14 hour shifts in a male dominated job to get ahead. Nothing could stop her tenacity and determination. Valerie was a well respected and generous person.
She fell in love with Port Credit and planted her roots her. She loved her neighbourhood, her neighbours and her neighbours were very fond of her. Valerie became an avid gardener when she retired and this was where one would find her all summer long, caring and enjoying her garden.
If everyone had a Momma like her, the world would be a better place filled with love, happiness and laughter. Valerie will be missed tremendously, may she rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a flower or tree in her memory or donate to the Canadian Red Cross Society.
