Sadly, in hospital on November 28, 2024, beloved and respected partner of Lynda Ferguson, father of John (Karen) and David (Gabriella), predeceased by sister Margaret Somerville. John would approve if you were to treat yourself to a good book, raise a wee dram, or donate to a worthy cause in his memory. Here, in his words –
“I, the deceased, recently died in what I hope was a peaceful manner. I was born in Musselburgh, Scotland, but came to live in Canada in 1969. Although raised a Presbyterian, I became an atheist as a teenager and was happy to remain one for the rest of my life. I was educated in physics and biophysics, which enabled me to teach and do research at Carleton University. The pleasures of contemplating science, history, religion and football, as well as those to be found in books, the theatre and cinema, have brought much joy to my life. I am grateful for the friendship and laughter that I have shared with many people but I especially value the love and companionship shown me by my partner, Lynda Ferguson. I regret that in my old age I saw so little of my five grandchildren, Andrew, Cameron, Emily, Hannah and Katie. To them I offer the wisdom of Hamlet,
“This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.”
And now, those molecules whose passage through my body enabled my life, have finally left to join their innumerable colleagues.”
