Elmer Shabina-Debassige Obituary
In Loving Memory of
Elmer Douglas Shabina – Debassige.
June 19, 1942 – January 21, 2024
Doug passed away peacefully at the Wikwemikong Nursing Home on January 21, 2024 at the age of 81 years old.
Born to Angeline Debassige at the old homestead in West Bay on June 19, 1942. Doug was adopted and raised by Victoria and Gabriel Shabina in West Bay.
Beloved husband of Marion Debassige (predeceased).
Loving father of Billy, Ron and Kelly.
Survived by Sister-In-Laws Julie Debassige and Christine McGregor (Robert) of Toronto and Bessie of Albuquerque. Brother-In-Law Bill Simmers.
Predeceased by Sister-In-Laws Martha Simmers, Margaret Manitowabi, and Winnie “Pam” Debassige. Brother-In-Laws Mike Debassige, Lewis Debassige and Peter Debassige.
Douglas was raised in West Bay where he spent a lot of time helping his parents at the old homestead and helping others. He attended the West Bay Indian Day School and attended Spanish Residential School.
Douglas married Marion in 1961. They moved to Toronto where they both worked and started their family. In 1968 the family moved to Lansing, Michigan. Doug enjoyed a long career working for GM Motors on the Assembly Line where he retired. Doug always ensured that his family was supported and cared for. Doug was also a wonderful friend to many. He was a gentle giant. His humour, wit, kindness, generosity and love shined through. His smile and laughter would light up a room. He was also known as a jokester and prankster always teasing his nieces and nephews. Doug enjoyed playing the lottery, scratch tickets and enjoyed the casino now and again. He enjoyed yard sales, sports, visiting, crossword and search a word puzzles. Doug was also a spiritual man and supported his wife in her work with the Cristo Rey Church and connected with many within the congregation. He also was an active member of the “Manitoulin Island” group in Lansing. Doug also enjoyed coming home to West Bay for family visits. He had many friends in West Bay many of whom he will reconnect with in the Spirit World. He will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and his Wikwemikong Nursing Home Family.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the residents and staff at the Wikwemikong Nursing home for their kind and compassionate care.
Family and friends will gather at the Island Funeral Home on Saturday, January 27, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for visitation and 3:00 pm for the funeral. Cremation to follow.
There will be a celebration of life and burial for Douglas-baa on July 13, 2024 in M’Chigeeng.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Wikwemikong Nursing Home.
