Ann Christine “Chris” Stanton – passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Victoria General Hospital on March 22, 2024 at the age of 86. Chris was the beloved Mother of Jim (Anna) and Grandmother to James and Julianne.
Chris was born in Sunderland, England and was the eldest child of Ruby (Christie) and Moses “Wilson” Horswill and sister to John. As the daughter of an RAF Chaplain, the family moved frequently around the North of England during her early childhood. When the family briefly settled in West London in 1947, she was tasked with guiding her younger brother home through the dense London smog’s of the time. This early responsibility would preface a lifetime of caring for and guiding others.
As was customary for the time, Chris left for a Methodist boarding school in Lancashire at the age of 11. At about this time, she developed her love of theater – although never taking center stage, she always preferred to organize and produce. She went on to train as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital in London where she made deep friendships that would last a lifetime and span three continents. She not only qualified as an RN, but also completed her midwifery training. By 1962 she decided it would be good to spend a period of time abroad and she chose Canada. The plan was to stay for 2 years, but a blue–eyed compatriot who had also found his way to small town Ontario would change that.
She met her husband to be – James Handel Stanton (2003) while working at the Minden Red Cross outpost hospital and in 1964 they wed. They moved into an old school house, without much heat and no running water. The new couple made lifelong friends in Minden, but career choices led them south to the Lindsay area where they settled. Chris worked at the Ross Memorial Hospital for 25 years in various roles including Head Nurse on Surgical Floor and in Obstetrics. Eventually, she left the Hospital setting in favor of travelling nursing and continued with the VON for more than a decade.
Chris was a constant figure at Queen Street and Cambridge Street United Church throughout the years – leading the youth groups and using her talents for organization to bring people together. The couple purchased some farmland south of Lindsay and planted it with a mixture of hardwood and softwood trees – then went on to watch them grow for almost 50 years. In addition to raising a small family on the property, they found time to follow their passion for sailing and went on several adventures to Florida and the Bahamas.
Once Grandchildren came into the picture, Chris loved to spend as much time with them as possible. She travelled to BC every year for extended visits, eventually moving west full time in 2021.
She will be deeply missed by her family and the many people she touched throughout the years. A service will be held at Cambridge Street United church at 11:00 on May 9th. In lieu of flowers, please consider hugging your favorite tree. For those who are able, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or the charity of your choice is greatly appreciated.
