Sadly, we lost the best mother anyone could ask for on Tuesday, July 16th, 2024 at the age of 97. She passed peacefully with her family by her side. She will join dad Frank (deceased 1975) in heaven.
Mum was predeceased by her Scottish family – father James Cockburn, mother Bella, sister Jean Tarala (Burt) and brothers Robert Cockburn (Margaret) and Tom Cockburn (Margaret).
Mum is survived by Jim (Betty Anne), Julie, Tom (Gina), Bonnie (Ed), and Glenn (Debbie) as well as grandchildren Jimmy (Elke), Michelle (Mike), Brent (Brittany), Jeffrey (Deborah), Jewel, and Frank (Kaitlyn), as well as great-grandkids Katherine (Matt), Kyle, Joshua, Nathan, Elliot, and Grayson.
Born in the Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland mum was a war bride at the age of 17. Upon emigrating to Canada to be with her husband, she followed him from Rexton, NB to Saskatoon, and finally to Kingston. She pursued a career as a nurse’s aide at the Kingston Psychiatric hospital, retiring in 1986.
Wee of physical stature, mum was truly the rock of our family. She instilled a firm sense of right and wrong, and practiced a devoted family-first ethic. Her extremely generous nature was driven by a simple principle of wanting to witness the joy her gifts brought, rather than having to wait until her passing for us to receive them. She was very conscious of treating five kids equally – if one got, we all got! Her kind generosity was even extended to the neighbourhood cats, who supplemented their diets with plentiful cat treats.
So it’s cheerio the noo mum (mums way of ending a conversation) for now – until we meet in the next life.
The family wishes to thank the staffs at both the Fairmount Nursing Home and Briargate Retirement Home for their excellent care of our mother.
A private funeral service was held on July 19th at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens where she was interred beside our father.
