Johnston, Tara Carmela (Samis)
07 Apr 1969 – 13 Oct 2023
Passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute on the morning of 13th of October 2023. Tara was in her 55th year.
Beloved ex-wife of Barry Johnston and loving mother of Riley Johnston and Jenna Johnston of Kemptville ON. Dear daughter of Ethel Ina Samis and Eldon Herschel Samis of Edmonton AB. Dear sister of Royal E Samis and his wife Krystal (Fisher) of Edmonton AB; Charlotte Ione Hinkle (Samis) of Canyon Lake, Texas; and Renata Denean Rallon (Samis) and her husband Roger of Redwater AB. Also survived by numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews.
Tara grew up in Bon Accord, near Edmonton. She excelled at sports and was known to her friends as a fierce competitor in track and field, volleyball, and basketball. After graduating high school, she joined the Canadian Armed Forces where she enlisted as a reservist and worked part time in that capacity while completing her Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Alberta.
While working in Toronto during the summer of 1994 as a reservist, Tara applied for the Ontario Provincial Police where she was ultimately hired and posted to the Prescott detachment. She married Barry Johnston and together they built a home near Prescott and had 2 children (Riley & Jenna). Tara relocated to the Kemptville Detachment in 2009 as the family built a new home there. In 2022, Tara transferred to the Ottawa Detachment, and was there for 1 year before she passed. At the time of her transfer, Provincial Constable Tara Johnston had accumulated an impressive 29-year career with the OPP. Tara had a strong work ethic and was dedicated to doing the best she could for the people she served.
Tara enjoyed keeping fit, travelling, and scrapbooking and was looking forward to doing more when she retired. Her greatest accomplishment was being a mother to Riley and Jenna, whom she adored and was immensely proud of.
As per Tara’s last wishes there will be no funeral service, but friends and family are invited to a celebration of Tara’s life on the afternoon of Sunday 29th October 2023 between 1:30pm-4:30pm at the Kemptville branch of the Royal Canadian Legion located at 100 Reuben Crescent in Kemptville ON.
A special thank you to the caring and compassionate staff at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute ICU for the wonderful care they provided to Tara during her short time there, and the compassion and understanding they showed to her family. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute in Tara’s name would be gratefully appreciated.
