Marshall, Charles Alexander
Dec 9, 1940 – Dec 24, 2023
Charlie, aged 83, passed away peacefully after a short illness at Kemptville District Hospital with his wife and two children by his side on Dec 24, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy (née Jack), his children Caroline (Laura) and Charles (Bonnie). Granda of Christopher (Sydney), Patrick, and Andrew (Kelsey). Great Granda of Logan and AJ. Son of the late Charles Marshall and Mary Quinn. Brother of Jim (Margaret) and the Late Peter (Fiona). Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Charlie was born in Forres, Scotland, and grew up in Evanton, Scotland where he went to school with Dorothy, his future wife and partner of more than 65 years.
As a young man, he had a keen interest in woodturning and grew up to be a very accomplished craftsman. He was dubbed the best woodturner in the UK by Peter Child, himself one of the great masters of woodturning! Charlie turned this passion into a lifelong career. He was featured in a craftsman of Scotland documentary; turned wooden beverage trays for a G7 summit in Montebello, QC 1981 and has made large display columns that are in the National Gallery of Canada to this day… to name just a few highlights. In his spare time, he made wood marquetry pictures and was a pretty good woodcarver too. He could identify any tree or piece of wood. In addition to his passion for wood, he had many other interests. He was an avid toy car collector, model builder, fisherman, aviation buff, and dabbled with learning to play the guitar and the accordion.
Early in his married life, he was in the Royal Air Force and lived and worked in many countries; this included taking the family to Cyprus while stationed there for 3 years. What an experience for the whole family.
Life was always full of adventures: climbing hills, getting stuck on cliffs, roaming into the wild to find that perfect fishing spot, taking us kids to see new things and oh yes, the hobby shops! There are so many stories, and he was always willing to talk, laugh and reminisce anytime. He taught us so many varied skills and shared his knowledge about so many different things. You always learned something when you were with him.
Charlie, Dorothy and their 2, almost grown-up children: Caroline and Charles, emigrated to Canada in 1977 and continued with the adventures. Even when he was no longer physically able to work with wood, he was passionate about watching YouTube videos of outdoor sawmills and anything to do with woodworking. He lived his passions to the fullest. We will miss him very much!
A celebration of life will be held in early 2024, date and location to be determined.
A special thanks to the Kemptville District Hospital for the wonderful care given to him and a special thank you to Dr Zakhem for her compassion and kindness. Donations in his name may be made to the Kemptville District Hospital (CT Scanner Campaign)
