Hiruy Berhane passed away suddenly on Nov 19, 2024 at the age of 49 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Hamilton, Ontario.
He was born on Oct 21, 1975 to Lemlem Tesfamariam Andegiorgis and Berhane Teweldai Gebresilassie in Addis Ababa. He attended elementary school in Addis Ababa. At the age of 13, he moved to France and lived there for just under 3 years with the Bayon and Duval Families. He was then reunited with his family and moved to Hamilton, Ontario just 2 months shy of turning 16. He attended Westdale Secondary School and at the same time started working at Quality Inn Hotel, then Stitches clothing store at Limeridge Mall. Unbeknown to his family, this is the time he first encountered drugs. He then went on to attend The University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB for 1 year and returned to Ontario.
Officially his addiction was discovered by his family in August 1997 which began the long 27 year challenging journey. Although it may seem like this battle was lost, it in fact it was not. Hiruy’s life is a lesson for us all to stay loyal and loving to family and to never give up. Addiction was his adversary, but it has come to light now in his death that his sensitive and loving heart took so much of the burdens that were present in his life. Hiruy’s spirit never wavered and remained optimistic and hopeful no matter what, he would dust himself off and try again and again and again…….
Hiruy is survived by his parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces who he loved deeply and loved him back.
He was known for his loving, loyal heart; charismatic and charming personality; incredible intellect and multilingual abilities. Although we are saying goodbye to his beautiful grand presence, his spirit lives on. He is now home and at peace.
