Gregory Russell Mackan, 58, passed away at his home in Oakville with his family by his side on October 6, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the youngest of 10, born on June 23, 1965 in Hamilton, Ontario to the late Gordon and Rita (Foley) Mackan. Beloved husband of Suzanne. Loving father of William (Rebecca) and Emily (Daniel). He is survived by siblings Gordon Jr. (Deanna), Brenda Lynn Young (Ronald), Sharron Taylor (Dave), William (Alison), Michael (Patricia), Sheridan (Victoria), Kevin (Glenna), and Mark (Leona). Predeceased by his father Gordon Sr., his mother Rita (Foley), his brother John (Helga), and his brother-in-law Ronald Young (Brenda).
Gregory was known for his athleticism and adventurous personality, and participated in many sports teams throughout the years, but his passion was football. He was a Stampeder, a Crusader, a Brave, a Longhorn, and a Husky. He graduated from St. Mary’s University, where he played football and met a core group of lifelong friends. During his time at St Mary’s he participated in the 1992 Atlantic Bowl and Vanier Cup.
Gregory Russell Mackan spent 26 loving years with his wife, Suzanne King. Together, they raised 2 beautiful children, traveled, laughed, and won many family Euchre tournaments. Their love story was a testament to the strength of commitment, unwavering support, and genuine companionship. Gregory’s legacy includes not only his individual accomplishments but also the profound and lasting impact of the love he and Suzanne nurtured throughout their years together.
In his free time, Gregory enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing cards, attending sports events, concerts, and traveling. He will be remembered for his willingness to help anyone any time, his strength, his humor, his loving smile, and his fun and excitable attitude.
Greg made friends everywhere he went, and will be missed by his family, siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends, including his best and long time friends Phil Doyle (Beth) and David Stortini.
Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on October 19 from 4-7pm.
A funeral service will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Burlington (2265 Headon Road) on October 20 at 11am.
Friends and family are invited to attend and celebrate Gregory Russell Mackan’s beautiful life.
Greg volunteered for over 20 years as a member and chair of the Stroke Recovery Association in Burlington and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the March of Dimes.
