Ruth Isobel McCosh (née MacKenna) in her 100th year.
Born February 5, 1925 Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
Died June 14, 2024 London, Ontario
Loving wife of the late Kenneth Robert McCosh (1984). Predeceased by her parents Hartley MacKenna and Sadie Pippi, brother William MacKenna, sister Patricia Sears, brother-in-law Percy Sears, sister-in-law Mary Williams, brother-in-law Allan Williams and son-in-law Vern Welsh. Devoted mother to Janice McCosh-Welsh (Dan), Judy Watson (David) and Joanne Graf (Paul). Adoring grandmother to Wendy (Mike), Shannon (Bill), Niki (Sean), Michael (Margot), Jay, and Adam (Belinda). Also survived by seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Ruth was born on a dairy farm in 1925 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. She loved working in the outdoors and being close to the water. These two elements would weave through her life consistently. Ruth was devastated by the death of her dear brother, Billy, in 1943 while he was defending the commonwealth with the RCAF in France. Near the end of World War II, she met a handsome soldier, Ken McCosh, who was a radio operator stationed in Yarmouth. The two fell in love and as a young bride in 1947, she traveled with him to his hometown, Kincardine, Ontario.
In 1949, shortly after settling into their home just a stone’s throw from Lake Huron, Ken and Ruth began a family, and welcomed three beautiful daughters within three years. Together, they raised their family in Kincardine and Port Elgin, before moving finally to Goderich in 1965.
Through her years, Ruth remained steadfast in her devotion to her family. She was generous with her affection and attention, adored spending time with her children and grandchildren, baking sublime cookies and pies (gingersnaps were her specialty), tending to her lawn and garden, and knitting wool socks and mittens. She loved completing the daily jumbles in the newspaper, and “finding a deal” on a shopping trip. She cherished travelling with her daughters, and enjoyed adventures in Hawaii, Europe, on Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and in the Caribbean.
Ruth was small in stature and a hard-working force of nature. Until she was 85, she took her daily “walk to the highway” and didn’t miss a day of knocking the spider webs from her windows. Fiercely independent, she shovelled her own driveway, stacked her own firewood, and cut her own lawn. She never let an opponent have it easy, in checkers, Blackout Bridge, or Crokinole. She was a voracious reader, devouring mysteries late into the night.
In her later years, Ruth moved into the town of Goderich, with a view of the water she loved so much. Her favourite tea cup and a puzzle could always be found in her sunroom. After her dementia diagnosis in 2019, she moved to the Arbor Trace memory care facility in London, where she was a beloved resident for the many caring nurses and aides. At the age of 99, she passed away peacefully.
Ruth’s memory will be honoured at a Celebration of Life on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #109, 56 Kingston Street, Goderich. Please join us as we share stories of our formidable mum, Nanny, and Great Nan. Her favourite colour was purple – please consider wearing purple on July 2nd in Ruth’s honour. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to The Salvation Army or the Goderich Legion.
