Sheard; Larry Wayne – Worshipful Master, Past Master of Prince Arthur Lodge #333
Shortly after finding out he had cancer, Larry passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Brightshore Health System, Markdale, in his 73rd year of life. Beloved husband of 51 years to Shelly (nee Getz) and loving father of Erin(Rob). Dear brother of Wendy Murray of Port Alberni, BC, Lynne(Peter Robinson) of Elmira, Rhonda(David) Walnoha of Pennsylvania, Lonnie(Debora) of Maxwell, and sister in-law Tracy(Vaughn) Bosley of Parry Sound. Cherished uncle to many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many great greats. Loving parent to more than 30 foster children over the last 23 years. Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Evelyn Sheard and beloved sister Charlene Sheard.
Larry was born November 7, 1950, in Toronto, Ontario. While he spent his youngest years in and around the city, he truly found his home when his parents moved to the family farm in Maxwell in 1967. Upon a trip to Creemore one night, he met and then married the love of his life Shelly on October 21, 1972. As a young family they spent time in the west coast, moving to a logging camp on Vancouver Island. It was an adventurous few years, but they missed their family and couldn’t stray far from Grey County for long. Coming back home, Larry primarily worked as a stone mason and carpenter, and was the owner and operator of L. Sheard Construction. In his later years he worked for South East Grey Community Outreach, a role he loved as it meant supporting people in the community.
He was a jack of all trades and worked hard at whatever job he did, but nothing compared to the countless hours he spent volunteering and giving back to his community. There was very little he didn’t do. A former Lorne Scot Cadet, Larry was a Scouts Canada leader and district commissioner, and particularly enjoyed the challenge of winter camping, meeting scouts from around the world at jamborees, and teaching bushcraft skills. He was a long-time member and Past President (past everything!) of the Feversham Kinsmen, as well as a past Deputy Governor of Zone C, District 1(several times); through Kinsmen he was particular proud of his fundraising work as Cystic Fibrosis Coordinator during the time the gene for CF was identified. Like his father, he was very proud to be a FreeMason and felt honoured to hold many leadership roles with the Masonic Lodge, and especially to have been a Past Master of Prince Arthur Lodge #333.
Always wanting to keep busy, Larry was a man of many hobbies from hiking to woodworking to motor-cycles to reading sci-fi to coffee club to collecting – in more recent years he became an avid Cub Cadet aficionado! He was known for his big hugs and big heart, was loved by and will be missed by so many.
Words cannot express our gratitude to all of the staff at the Markdale Hospital for all of your love and care to Larry and our family over his final days.
A celebration of Larry’s life will take place on Sunday, October 29 at the Flesherton Kinplex at 2:30pm. Doors will open at 2pm. There will be a time of visitation and fellowship to follow the service. Brethren of the Prince Arthur Lodge, #333, Flesherton are called to assemble for service at 2:30pm. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Brightshore Health System, Markdale would be greatly appreciated. Online donations and condolences at www.fawcettfuneralhome.ca
