In Celebration of
Antony (Tony) Leonard Stuart
December 10, 1929 –
September 18, 2024
Passed away peacefully at home with his son and daughter by his side, on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer, less than three months before his 95th birthday.
Born in London, England, to John and Dorothy Stuart in December 1929, Tony apprenticed as a photoengraver prior to doing two years of national service in the Royal Air Force as a ground crew radio specialist from 1948 to 1950.
Emigrating to Canada in April 1957, Tony first came to Toronto where he met his future wife Isobel at a dance at the Piccadilly Club, before being offered work as a hand engraver in Winnipeg. Returning to Toronto to marry Issie in October 1958, Tony eventually bought a house in Etobicoke where he lived for more than 60 years. He worked for more than two decades at Bomac Batten as a photoengraver until he was laid off, and later retrained in the stripping film process before taking early retirement from the printing industry in the late 1980s.
Tony became a member of the Humber Seniors Curling Club, Chalet Golfers, Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club, Etobicoke Bridge Club and ACBL, transitioning to online bridge at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. An amateur astronomer who built his own telescopes and a hobbyist at heart, Tony enjoyed spending time doing marquetry, stamp collecting, and operating radio-controlled model airplanes and sailboats.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Isobel (2011) and brothers Ron (2000) and John (2015), Tony is survived by his sister Jeanne, son David and daughter Linda. He is also missed by his many extended family members including his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews in both Canada and the United Kingdom.
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel at 4933 Dundas St. West in Etobicoke on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Butler Chapel on Friday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m., which will be followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
