Charles (Chuck) Robert Flood
Due to the professionalism, kind and compassionate staff at Riverview Gardens, Chatham, (thank you!) dad passed away peacefully with family members by his side on January 3, 2024. He was 88 years old.
Dear husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Reynolds Flood & the late Joan Flood (nee Brockman) – 2001.
Predeceased by his parents Ross Coatsworth – 1970 & Ethel (Secord) – 1985.
Treasured father to sons Kevin (Anne-Marie Laniak); Dale (Patty); Chris (Grace); & daughters Paula Grail (Mike); Donna Flood; & his little Ethel (1959).
The Crowder’s, who lost their mom Francis (1968) at 36 years old: late Lynn – 2021 (Peter Niece), their son Josiah (Alicia) and daughter Kate (Mike); Bruce (Lucie), sons Kevin P.Eng. (Kelsey) & Scott (Chelsey); & Keith (Penny) & sons Cameron (nurse Dayna) & Chase.
The Reynolds family. Betty’s six daughters (that’s right “6!”) who he loved dearly: Kim & Vincent Carlucci, son Vincent; late Doreen Reynolds (2023); Suzanne & George Drexl, their children Alexandrea and Jake; Cathleen & John Bonsiewech; Colleen & James Farley, sons James, Thomas & Daniel; & Maureen & Paul Allieri, daughters Stephanie, Emily, & Abigail.
Cherished grandfather to Kyle (Amanda), Katrina Montcalm (Tyler), Brandon, Kiana Flood (& Mitchell he hopes!), & Carson Grail (will win best dressed award at the funeral!) Great grandfather to Callahan Jack Flood; Hazel, Winsley, Elliston, & Es Crowder.
Dad was born in 1935 and unlike his siblings, never lived through the Great Depression or went to war. Looking out for him were oldest brother by 22 years the late Donald – 1996 (Aileen 2005), Margaret Sweet – 1969 (Harold 2014), WWII veteran James – 1988 (Ruth 2003), & WWII veteran Ross Jr. – 1997 (Hannah 2014).
Brother-in-law to the Brockman family, Colchester North dairy, and cash crop farm family Alphons (Edna 2022), late Mary Ryan – 2022 (Joe 1998); late Clement – 1998 (Marie 2001); late Richard – 1992 (Rosella); Rosemary Bilyea; late Annie Gagnon – 2006 (Clem); Bernadine Hamelin; Maggie Kelchak (John 2017); Cathy Gainer; & the baby of eleven brothers & sisters Patty Feckas (Frank).
Also survived by many nieces and nephews. His school classmates included nephews Patrick (1977) & his brother Robert Flood. Chuck & Betty were blessed to have spent time with their late niece Sister Elaine, Sisters of St. Joseph – 2021.
Charles worked his entire career in the grain business meeting & making friends with farmers all over Es County. His grandfather Timothy R. Flood had owned a gristmill in Harrow. His dad moved the business to Maidstone where he & his brothers operated the R. C. Flood Grain Co.
He was so fortunate to be married to two great women. He never learned to operate a stove & could only find his way into the kitchen with his nose.
He loved his family, coaching & playing sports, traveling by air and sea with Betty. He would pout for days when the Bruins would lose to the Canadiens in the playoffs. Joan would be conflicted with her love of Rocket Richard and her loyalty to Bruce & Keith.
His passion was baseball. In the 1950’s he played for the Maidstone Shamrocks & continued to play with the help of physiotherapist Betty until he turned 80 in Florida.
Families never agree on much, but if dad had ten more daughters, our family agrees Paula would still be daddy’s little girl!
Charles is resting at the Kennedy Funeral Home Ltd. (519-776-7378) 128 Talbot St. North, Es on Wednesday January 10 from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m.
On Thursday January 11, family and friends are invited to gather at the St. Mary’s Parish in Maidstone after 10 a.m. followed by the funeral mass at 11 a.m. A luncheon shall be served after mass and then followed by burial at the Colchester Memorial Cemetery.
