Anthony (Tony) Klein Gunnewiek
(September 9, 1955 to February 23, 2024)
Tony, 68, of Elgin, passed away February 23 unexpectedly, during recovery from PEA surgery
for CTEPH at Toronto General Hospital.
Beloved husband of 36 years to Leslie Hungate Gunnewiek and loving father to Claire (Nigel)
Smith, Amanda and Alex. Treasured Opa of Allan, Nina, Vera and Poppy. Predeceased by his
parents Tony and Annie Gunnewiek and brother-in-law Leo Miltenburg. Tony will be greatly
missed by his siblings John (Joyce) Gunnewiek, Cecilia Miltenburg, Angela (Terry) Woods, Lowy
(Kate) Gunnewiek and Marg (John) Peco, and many nieces and nephews.
Tony was born and raised on Gunnebrooke Farms in Elgin. He graduated from Rideau District
High School and went afield to farm in Alberta and Warkworth, ON. He earned his pilot’s
license and then rode his motorcycle back to farm with his brother John and father Tony Sr. He
joined the Junior Farmer’s organization where he met the love of his life, veterinarian Dr. Leslie
Hungate. They were married in 1987 at St. Columbanus Church in Elgin and raised 3 children
together on the farm. Tony was a passionate dairyman, crop farmer, and maple syrup producer,
expanding and modernizing the family farm.
Tony was an early riser and hard worker but he made time for many Sunday drives, camping
trips, family reunions and vacations abroad. His loved ones will fondly remember him for his
boisterous laugh, kindness and curiosity. His love of local history, geography, politics and
reading made conversation easy with just about anyone. He made many friends during his long
time membership in the Leeds Soils and Crops Improvement Association and volunteering with
the Elgin Lions Club.
Tony will be remembered when wandering his woods, during the maple season and with every
sunrise over the fields. In honoring Tony’s wishes cremation will take place and his ashes will be
scattered in the sugarbush. A celebration of life will be held at the Elgin Lions Club on July 6. In
lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Elgin Lions Club or the Canadian
War Amps.
