It is with extreme sorrow we announce the peaceful passing of Jean Smith in her 93rd year on Sunday, January 28, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. Born Annie Jean McLeod on April 6, 1931, Jean was much loved and respected for her selfless dedication to family, her wicked sense of humour and her charitable achievements over many decades in the Canfield area. Survived and missed deeply by her husband of 73 years, Bob Smith. Jean was a fiercely proud and loving mother to – Brenda (Jack), Robert (Donna), Brad, Don (Linda) and Gary (Lisa). Cherished grandmother to Matthew, Mitchell (Steph), Courtney, Kesa, Kevin (Beth), Jody (Al), Jorja, Natasha and Katie (Paul) – and to her great grandchildren Hunter, Charlotte, Olivia, Easton, Paisley, Jackson and Walker. Also much loved and fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
As a child Jean lived in the tiny hamlet of Cook’s Station until she moved with her family to Canfield in 1939. She would remain there for the next 85 years. Over that time she became involved in too many organizations and local causes to list. She was a stalwart member of the Canfield United Church, a driving force with the Women’s Institute, the community centre and the volunteer fire department. She logged countless miles behind the wheel (in particular, of a fast 1957 Ford), driving her own kids and others to hockey games, Girl Guide meetings, Scout jamborees, baseball tournaments and summer camps.
Jean lived an incredibly full life, made even fuller due to her dedication to friends, family and anyone in need. As one friend noted, “She had a heart as big as a washtub.”
On her passing, the family wishes to thank the kind and compassionate staff at Haldimand War Memorial Hospital. They went above and beyond the call of duty caring for Jean these past 5 months.
Friends can call at J. W. Hart Funeral Home, 113 Lock St. E, Dunnville on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Service to be held at 11:00 a.m. at Canfield United Church on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Online condolences and photos at www.jwhartfuneralhome.com.
