It is with profound sadness that we regret to inform you that Gordon Dodd passed away Tuesday December 3, suddenly, but peacefully at home.
Gord was a proud father of Scott (Jean), Jeff (Jen), Karalyn, and Kristina. And an even prouder grandfather to Austin, Duncan, Kristofer, Ty, Jamie, Dana, and his namesake Gord.
He was born in Hamilton to his mother Elenna and father Trevor. As a young man he excelled in track and field, running for the Hamilton Olympic Club. He had the honour to be the first person to carry the torch over the bridge for the very first Canusa Games in August of 1958. He was one of 200 athletes competing in that inaugural year. He had the opportunity to hoist the torch again In 2018 when one of his grandchildren also competed in the Canusa games.
Gord spent his early adult years as the son of “Trevor S. Dodd and Son” auction rooms. When that business was sold, he moved on to Ferguson Foundry then to McCoy Foundry where he worked until early retirement due to injury. While unfortunate and painful, this allowed him to care for the love of his life, Carol, during her battle with cancer, until her passing on March 1, 2003.
Gord enjoyed many things. He had an enviable green thumb. And with this talent he loved gardening of all kinds. From roses outside to orchids inside. He loved his birds and doing word search puzzles. He would read anything from Spaghetti Westerns to spy thrillers.
Most of all he was an avid hockey fan. A die-hard leaf fan. It started from coaching his sons to spectating his grandsons. In the most recent couple of years, he was a regular fixture at every Paris Titans game, either home or away. Always willing to give his “two cents” to any coach who would listen (thank you Mike Christian for being the willing ear on so many occasions).
Gord is survived by his 6 siblings. Joan (Tom), Marilyn (the late Doug), Bruce (Lisa), Brian (Pearl), John (Diane), and Diane (Mike)
Special thanks needs to go out to a few people. The ever-amazing Dr. Fred Spencer and Kerry who took care of him during and after his quadruple bypass. Melanie and Fred, who were friends that became family. And most importantly to Duncan, who was the one who found him, called 911 and followed their instructions to a T until emergency personnel arrived. Despite all your best efforts it was already too late. We all thank you from the bottom of our hearts for doing everything you could.
Cremation has already taken place and a celebration of life will be at the Thirsty Cactus in Dundas, 2 King Street East, on Saturday, December 7th from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. in the back room. In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to either the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
