Jean Squarebriggs Jacques (1941-2024) died on Thursday, 22 August at her home in Thornbury, Ontario. Before she became Mrs. Jacques in 1988, she was known as a much-loved teacher by her maiden name—with the “Miss.” emphatically underlined.
In 2002 one of her students wrote a charming short essay in this newspaper about his first meeting with his new teacher:
“A stilettoed foot ending a pant leg appeared out of the car, followed by a Halston-sunglassed head smoking a cigarette. …With the biggest smile in the style a la Rosalind Russell from Auntie Mame she extended her hand and said ‘Well, hello darling, I’m Miss. Squarebriggs.’ This mysterious woman, who blew into the parking lot like a tsunami during a sandstorm, was the most glamourous and coolest woman I think I’d ever seen in my 11 years. …Over the school year Miss. Squarebriggs would change my views of learning… I was proud that she was my teacher. The hardest day of my life that year was to say goodbye.”
Jean is survived by her loving husband, David Jacques.
