Helen Gauthier (née Dixon)
July 9, 1949 – December 19, 2023
Helen died peacefully at home after a brief struggle with metastatic cancer.
Helen had a huge heart and will be dearly missed by loved ones. Throughout her life, she embodied kindness and love. She is mourned by her loving partner James Lark. Helen was deeply beloved by her daughter Eleanor Alexander, son-in-law Hadi Hosseini and their three children, Azita, Kian and Navid, her son Autumn Corvus and daughter-in-law Andréa Schnell. She is lovingly remembered by her siblings Carol Seglins, Marg Williams, Jane (& brother-in-law Rob) Salhani and John Dixon. She was predeceased by her brother Bob and by her parents Ford and Eleanor Dixon of Sudbury, where Helen was born. She was also predeceased by her loving husband of several years, Philippe Gauthier. Helen is warmly remembered by the father of her children and first husband, Ralph Alexander, and by sisters-in-law Pauline and Celia. She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Helen has been blessed by many dear friends in her life. In recent years, she enjoyed special connections with Marj Clute, Patty Torpey and Joan Andrews, among others. Helen cherished her memories of friends who predeceased her, including Helen Filiatrault and Nancy Gillies. Our family will be forever grateful to her dear friend Brenda Carscallen, particularly for her support in Helen’s last days. We are also grateful to Dr. Catherine Moran and the whole team at the Moran Medical Centre.
Helen lived a full and exuberant life. She was dedicated to family, first, and put her whole self into caring for those closest to her. In addition to this, she had a phenomenal work ethic and loved to help others through various vocations over her lifetime. Her early career included public health nursing, which she loved. She later focused on her family, in addition to channeling her passions for health and for supporting women into a number of businesses selling ladies’ clothing and health products. Another career highlight was her years teaching children to swim. In later years, Helen dedicated herself to helping those needing her care as a personal support worker. In each role, she dedicated herself to helping others, always.
In addition to family and work, Helen had many hobbies. She was a voracious reader and also loved music, including playing piano for many years. Helen was an athlete, always on the move. She particularly loved swimming and downhill skiing, and enjoyed windsurfing in earlier years. She was also a talented and passionate gardener. Her children have fond memories of family camping trips and many walks at Wasaga Beach. In recent years, she delighted in playing with her grandchildren at the beach and teaching them to love the water as much as she did. Helen had a deep Christian faith and was an active church member throughout her life, most recently at Wasaga Beach United Church.
A private celebration of life reception will occur for family and friends. Friends who would like more information are welcome to call or leave a message at 705-351-2306. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation in Helen’s memory is encouraged to support Youth Haven Barrie youthhaven.ca or the Nature Conservancy of Canada natureconservancy.ca, or a charity of your preference.
