Marjorie Ann Ellen, beloved mother of Debbie Ellen (Alan Monkhouse), Sue Easton, and David Ellen (Liesbet Janssen), and grandmother of Lia, Lukas and Jake, passed away on November 28, 2023, at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, surrounded by family.
Marjorie grew up in Darlington, England, then made the adventurous move to London, England to work as a telephone operator between the UK and France. She met her husband, Montague Ellen, (predeceased in 2022), at an Italian language class and continued to seek adventure when they moved to Montreal, Canada. After starting a family, they moved to London, Ontario and ultimately, Chatham, where they lived for the past 50 years.
With a genuine love of children and service, Marjorie worked as a nanny to two families and volunteered for the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities supporting both adults and children with developmental delays. She was an avid gardener and reader, and her adventurous spirit was with her to the end, though her travels shifted from trips to China, Hawaii and Barbados with her daughter, Debbie, to trips to Erieau, Mitchell’s Bay and Colasanti’s with her daughter, Sue. She never lost her love for England, and stayed close to her brother John Bowerbank (Cathy) and cousin Margaret
Bingham. Coronation Street was a nightly ritual. Her warmth, love, and twinkle will be missed by all who knew her.
