Karen Elaine Spanswick passed peacefully with her loving family by her side on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at Chatham Kent Hospice. Survived by her loving spouse, Randy Toulouse. Daughter of Eleanore (nee Kaco) and the late Robert Cribbis. Cherished mother of Ryan (Jenn) Spanswick and Colleen and Richard O’Rourke. Grandmother of Darrien Spanswick, and Carter and Reed O’Rourke. Sister of Sharon (William) Hnatiuk and Deb (Jeff) Heckler and sister-in-law of the late Dan, the late Terry, the late Jamie, Susan Webster and Janice Dawson. Daughter-in-law of the late Ray and the late Meda Tolouse. She will be dearly missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Karen will always be remembered for her love and compassion for animals. Even as a small child, bringing home strays from the neighbourhood, much to the delight of her parents. That continued throughout her life as she was never without a special fur baby or two. She always had a special place in her heart for her dear beagles. It makes us smile to think Karen will be up in heaven with them once again.
Karen had a real talent in art as she often was asked to create and paint all the sets for the school theatre productions. She had such a dedication to working hard, sometimes with 2 or 3 jobs at once. This left her with very little time to pursue her passion for art, however, she always found ways to enjoy it by flower arranging, crafts, and designs around her home.
Karen had a brave and adventurous side to her and moved across the country from her hometown in Southern Alberta as a young woman in her early 20’s. This is where she got married and had her son Ryan. She would describe Ryan as her greatest accomplishment in life. She frequently spoke of Ryan with great pride as to his achievements in school and his career, and to this day as a wonderful husband to Jen and father to her dear grandson, Darrien.
Karen often spoke of the insurmountable love and support from her partner Randy and did not know how she could be so blessed to have him in her life. With Randy, also came his siblings Deb, Jeff, and Sue, who soon developed a close friendship between them. Karen’s family back home will always be grateful and relieved that she had these amazing people in her life, especially supporting her in her most difficult hours throughout her illness.
Karen’s time on earth was way too short. She leaves a legacy of her kindness and generosity to anyone in need and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Family would like to give special thanks to all of the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at Chatham-Kent Hospice for their compassionate care. If desired, donations can be made to the Chatham Kent Hospice in Karen’s memory.
Cremation has taken place. A private family committal service by the graveside will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Blenheim at a later date.
