It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Fletcher Dawson, who peacefully left us on December 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife Bess and family at the Chatham Kent Hospice. Jim was 77 years old.
Born on November 24, 1947, in Chatham, Son of late Woodrow Dawson (Margaret Roe) and Meryl Cranston. Jim led a full life that was defined by his love for his family and his unwavering dedication to his craft. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Bess Dawson; children, Debra Crowell (husband John), Chris Dawson (wife Melissa), and Chad Dawson (wife Natascha); grandchildren, Kelsy Crowell, Brock Crowell (wife Kate), Kyle Dawson, Kristen Dawson (Rob Campbell), and Machaila Wesch-Dawson; great-grandchildren, Grace McIntosh, Jackson McIntosh, and Brynn Crowell; and his sister, Beulah Hind (husband Larry). Jim was extremely proud of his large extended family. His passing is a testament to the profound impact he had on those he loved, many of whom were by his side as he peacefully passed.
Jim’s passion for carpentry and woodworking was evident in his life’s work. He ran his own small business, crafting custom kitchen cabinets, windows, doors, and more. His handiwork can be found in hundreds of homes and buildings, each piece a reflection of his meticulous attention to detail and pride in his work. His legacy lives on in the beautiful, enduring creations he left behind.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time in nature. He could often be found in his element, cutting firewood for his home and workshop. Whether at work or at play, Jim’s strength of character, persistence, and hardworking nature were qualities that earned him the respect of all who knew him. His friends admired his honesty and his readiness to lend a helping hand.
Jim also had a subtle, cheeky sense of humor that remained with him until the very end. Known for his persistence (or as some might say, his stubbornness), Jim was a man of integrity who worked tirelessly to build a good life for himself, Bess, and their children, starting from very humble beginnings.
In keeping with his wishes, Jim’s ashes will be laid to rest on his small farm, a place he loved deeply. There will be no formal funeral service, but Bess and the family will host a celebration of Jim’s life at a later date.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Chatham Kent Hospice for their compassionate care during Jim’s final days. The family kindly encourages that donations be made to the Chatham Kent Hospice in Jim’s memory.
Jim will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, craftsmanship, and kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
