Our Weber Family Tree has lost the strongest, most resilient, and beautiful oak branch.
Edgar Cyril Weber of Chatham (born in his beloved Carrick Township, Bruce County) passed peacefully on Wednesday January 17, 2024, mere weeks shy of his 98 th birthday.
Comfort resides in the fact he is joining his beautiful and beloved wife, Bernice Monica (Nee St Marie) (2019) for eternity. They had been married 72 years and considering courtship, they were together three quarters of a century.
Ed is survived by his loving children; Terrie, Scott, Tracy, and Melissa along with his beautiful granddaughters; Stacey, Allyson, and Rebecca.
Dad’s family is massive, and he has two loving sisters remaining, Audrey (Ancaster) and Phyllis of Kitchener. His in-laws: Florence (Brampton). Ken (Hanover), Maurice (Langley BC), Jean (London) and Bernice (Langley BC) continued to support him with much love in his quest to wring out all the life Father Time would afford him.
Our beloved father will be reunited with his parents, William, and Magdeline (Phillipi) alongside a cast of wonderful siblings who have passed before him. {Herbert (Isabel), Beatrice (Frank/Bert), Gerald (Genevieve), Norman (Margaret), Eileen (Leonard), Marie (Ken), Bernard (Sylvia) Robert, Margaret, and Patrick (Ruth)}
Dad was a small-town boy moving to the big city with nothing in his pockets…. just his lovely hard-working wife in tow. And work they did!
The blue-eyed heart breaker met mom while whitewashing barns. They both worked extremely hard in tobacco, tomato, and cucumber fields before they even contemplated having children. When there were “iceboxes” prior to refrigeration, dad worked at Terry’s ice hauling 50 lb ice blocks on each shoulder into homes. This led to a 20-year stint with Canada Bread as a salesman. He was popular. It was as close to Paul Newman showing at your doorstep as possible.
When the bread route business became antiquated, he found employment for 25 years at Eaton Yale. The fieldwork never stopped after any shift. He never missed a day of work and we wanted for nothing. Apparently, he was a pool shark, a professional euchre player and cookie thief. He claimed things always tasted better when he snuck them out of the jar.
Papa Bear’s prized possession aside from his beautiful family was his sanctuary, the beloved family hobby farm. It fed the family for decades, and he was proud as a peacock to provide for us in that manner.
Dad was an honest, driven, and brilliant man who would help anyone in need. We were so proud of the example he set for all of us not only with his successes but how he turned around his challenges. The accelerant was always the responsibility he accepted as a father.
So many impacted Papa Bear’s world and allowed us to maximize the time we had with him. Dr Donna Watterud/ Dr Cara McMahon’s team with Shannon and Heather are a good reason we had him almost 100 years. Thank you is not strong enough.
Rick Balasin was one of dad’s favorites. He was his PSW for ten years and dad loved him like a son. We were blessed to have such a solid, dedicated, and caring gentleman in his circle of care. We would be amiss in not mentioning Shari Duquette who graciously filled in the time spans to be with dad when we were working. He was never alone 24/7……that is what a legend deserves.
In following with dad’s wishes he has been cremated with no services planned. He would not want anyone to shell out money for flowers and donations. Papa Bear would shake his head, raise his eyebrows with those legendary baby blues flashing away. He would be thrilled for people to just be kind to each other and live life as fully as he did.
“Be Good or Be Gone” was a trademark line from dad all our lives. It has served us very well ……simplistic and powerful. True to his consistent nature, he applied that philosophy even right to the end with respect to his own physical form on the seventeenth of January 2024.
Our beloved Papa Bear, there is an asterisk to your statement as you will never be gone from our hearts.
Always and forever.
