With grace and dignity, our Dad, Art Slater passed away on July 7, 2024 at the Chatham Kent Hospice. It gives us peace to know that he is reunited with our Mom, Eileen, who he missed every day since her passing in 2017.
Art was born on August 23,1932 in England. He started out as a “wee lad” along with his twin sister but soon grew tall and strong, running the roads of the countryside- first, on foot, then later on one of a series of motorcycles he prized. Dad’s father, William, was a member of the Coldstream Guards and his mother, Elsie, was a woman ahead of her time- raising a family while working in a munitions factory. At the age of seven, Dad was one of many children evacuated from Leeds and he recalled watching, awestruck, as Spitfires practised take offs and landings on an airfield near his host home. Early in his life, Dad learned the meaning of responsibility and independence.
When he had finished exploring the land of his childhood, Dad made the decision to emigrate, sailing to Canada on the SS New York in 1957. He settled in Chatham where he met our Mom at a dance hall and swept her off of her feet. They married in 1962. Dad worked for many years as a tool and die machinist at Eaton Springs. He and Mom enjoyed their retirement, wintering in Florida, and relaxing with family, at the home they built together.
Art is predeceased by his wife Eileen. Left to cherish his memory are daughters Sharron (Larry Gore), Lynda (Mark Thomson), and Heather (Cary Ebli), grandchildren Kevin, Karleigh, and Kristopher Gore, and furry sidekick, Ducky. Dad was a humble and quiet man; in honouring his wishes, cremation has taken place and the family will celebrate his life privately. We would like to thank the staff at Eden Villa who cared for our Dad when he was no longer able to live at home. There are no words to express our gratitude for your kindness and compassion. We would also like to thank Dr. Huffman and the staff and volunteers at the Chatham Kent Hospice for their exemplary care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Chatham Kent Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society. Memories and messages of condolence may be sent through www.lifetransitions.ca.
