It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Shirley Ann Harrison (nee Wilson) at 88 years of age on March 30, 2024, in Brockville, Ontario. Shirley was born on November 22, 1935, in Sydney, Cape Breton to Earl and Pearl Wilson and had a younger brother, Bruce Wilson. Shirley came from large extended families, and she spoke of them frequently telling stories of her many aunts and uncles.
Shirley studied Fine Arts at Mount Allison University and graduated with a teacher’s degree in Home Economics. She took a teaching job in Granby, Quebec and then met her husband, Donald Harrison (who passed in 2007). After multiple moves, Shirley spent the last 50 years living in Prescott, Ontario.
A former swim instructor, she welcomed the neighbourhood kids to swim in her pool. Those that grew up there will remember her red flag/green flag system – green meant the pool was open and all were welcome!
Shirley always had an eye for design and loved to paint. She played the piano, and some of our earliest memories, are her playing show tunes or hymns on our red piano. She loved to travel, getting the opportunity as a tour guide in her later years to see the world. She was also passionate about politics and loved nothing more than a good debate.
She is survived by her children Bruce Harrison (Sandra) and Joanne Harrison (Domenico Farinaccio) and their respective families.
Shirley’s wish was to be laid to rest in Cape Breton, and she will be going home to the rocky beaches and salt air.
Rest in peace mom, you will never be forgotten and loved always and forever.
Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada and will be gratefully acknowledged.
