Surrounded with loving family at her bedside, Rosemarie “Rosie” Huber passed away peacefully in the evening on Thursday Oct 5,2023 at the Brockville General Hospital. She was 91 years old. She is survived by her beloved husband Ruedi of 61 years, her devoted children Barb Kilgour (Larry) and Greg Huber (Gabriella), grandchildren Kurt Kilgour and Kourtney Kilgour. Also survived by 3 sisters, Maria, Vreni, Marietheres and one brother Franz. Predeceased by her parents Rosa Puntener-Arnold, Alois Puntener-Arnold, brothers Sepp, Alois Josef, Anton Johann, Gustav, and sister Sofie.
Proud of her heritage, Rosemarie was born in Erstfeld, Switzerland. She was the eldest child of 10. She was a big help to her mom with raising her siblings. After moving away from home, she went to work in a bakery (grocery store). Later she met her future husband and moved to Canada in 1962 to be with him to start a new life and family. She always wanted to be a business secretary, so her wish came true when Ruedi and her started up a printing business “Huber Print” which they successfully ran for 35 years. It was not an easy time for them, but they persevered and worked hard together as partners to make it happen. During this time, there were challenges and setbacks such as the May 1974 flood in Cambridge Ontario. It was an experience that they will never forget, nor her children.
Rosie loved to sew clothes for her children, cook, knit, macramé, rug hook, garden and make candles. She also enjoyed hiking, swimming, cycling, cross country skiing and playing “Jassa” a Swiss card game, with her family. She was very competitive and leaves behind some fun and wonderful memories!
It wasn’t until the last 5 years that she developed dementia/Alzheimer’s disease where the family saw her go through many stages. They always kept her “happy in the moment”, and she never lost the ability to remember who they were.
In April 2022 Ruedi and Rosemarie decided to sell their house in Cambridge and move to Brockville to be closer to their daughter. They both resided at the Wedgewood retirement home, but the disease progressed, and Rosmarie needed more care. She was then offered a bed on May 1, 2023, at St. Lawrence Lodge where her daughter worked as well. It was really a perfect situation. The staff provided exceptional care for her and the family wish to express their immense gratitude to them, to the staff at Wedgewood who had an impact on her, as well as the BGH nurses on 2 east and 3rd floor Palliative care.
It is her wish to be cremated and have her ashes sent to Erstfeld, Switzerland by family members for burial and memorial service (celebration of life) at a future date. A mass service will be held here in Brockville at St. Francis Church on Oct 16, 2023, at 10am.
Rosie’s motto was: “time is short, you may only have today to reach out to someone”.
If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Canadian Cancer Society to reflect the gratitude by the family for these great organizations.
Send a message of condolence or share a special thought of Rosie on the Memory Wall above.
