Jeanne Kalivas, at the age of 92, passed away peacefully with the love of her children and grandchildren by her side on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at the Palliative Care Unit of the Brockville General Hospital. Lovingly remembered by her children Helen Godin (Peter), Lily Lynch and Michael Kalivas (Barbara). Jeanne was a loving and proud grandmother to six grandchildren, cherished as their Yiayia by Christina Lynch (Kevin), Ali Lynch (Adam), Andre Godin (Petroula), John Godin (Carly), John Kalivas (Mackenzie) and Karoline Kalivas (Devin). Also lovingly remembered by her great grandchildren Noah, Kali, Lillian, Peyton and Gabe. Jeanne is also survived by her brother Phillip Dariotis (Marie) of Boston and many nieces, nephews, and close family members in Montreal, Toronto, Boston, New York, Bermuda, and Greece. Jeanne was predeceased by her loving husband John Kalivas, and her parents Constantinos and Constandina Dariotis (of Greece), as well as her siblings Olymbia, Peter, Tom, Jimmy, George, and Bill, and by her sweet great granddaughter Cecilia.
Jeanne was born on September 16, 1931 in Granitseika, Greece, and came to Canada with her husband John and baby Helen in 1957. They initially settled in Montreal. On an intended drive to St. Catharines, Ontario, they happened upon Brockville for a coffee break. They did not finish their drive to St. Catharines that day, as they fell upon a business opportunity in Brockville and never left. Jeanne started Jon’s Restaurant with her husband John in 1960, and she enjoyed her life’s long work there. Jeanne was a constant presence at Jon’s and enjoyed the company of many customers and friends over the years. Jeanne also enjoyed many summer trips to Greece visiting with family and friends. Jeanne was faithfully devoted to the Greek Orthodox Church and supported it in every way she could. Her greatest joy in life was being amongst her family, whom she was most proud of, every day.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, 4 James Street East, Brockville on Thursday, November 16 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A private funeral service will take place at the Greek Orthodox Church in Brockville on Friday November 17, 2023 followed by interment at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, with Father Eudokimos Mathioudakis officiating.
Jeanne’s family would like to thank the staff at the Brockville General Hospital and the Palliative Care Unit for their recent care, as well as CarePartners for their home support. Memorial donations to the Greek Orthodox Church of Brockville, the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation Palliative Care Unit and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
