Michael (Mick) Alan AVEY
2-Oct-1938 to 21-Oct-2024
Mick passed away peacefully, at 86 years, at Hospice Simcoe in Barrie, Ontario on Monday October 21, 2024, with family at his side. He is now free from the ravages of Alzheimer’s dementia and the freedoms and dignities it stole from him. He is survived by his wife, Wendy, of 63 years, his son Colin (Ladda), daughter Sharon (Kari), and son Gareth. He was the proud Pop to Mitchell (Felicia), Kyle (Krystal), Hasana, Shamira, Tiernan, and Saifah. He was also great-grandfather to Kaydence, Kiyah, Tenleigh, Blake, Lucy and Amicia. Mick is also survived by Lisa, who considered him her “borrowed dad.” He was predeceased by father Roy, mother Gladys Warren, and brother Peter.
Originally from Poole, Dorset, England, Mick met Wendy in 1960 when he returned to England following three years in the British Army, which he served in Germany and Malaya (now Malaysia). He had been planning to return to the Army, but meeting Wendy changed his mind.
Mick was an excellent dart player, and could have played professionally in England had he not married, had a family and moved to Canada. While courting, he and Wendy spent many evenings in a pub with Mick playing darts — always proud that he typically won enough money to pay for their evening out! Mick later played darts in numerous competitions and won many trophies. To say he was competitive would be an understatement.
After moving to British Columbia, Canada, in April, 1974, Mick worked as a labourer building mobile homes. He and Wendy bought a mobile home and moved it to a property 40 minutes outside of Kelowna in the mountains. The family spent an idyllic and adventurous summer living off grid — with days spent floating down the mountain river on a giant inner-tube. One mid-August morning, Mick stepped out on the deck to go to work, slipped on some frost, and a hasty decision was made to move back down the mountain to Kelowna before winter!
In 1975, after 18 months in BC, the family moved to Ontario, and Mick worked for many years installing walk-in coolers in Becker’s stores around Ontario. He had a strong work ethic and was proud of what he did and the relationships he developed with his co-workers and boss. Unfortunately, the overhead work took a toll on his shoulders and eventually forced him to give up the darts that he loved and excelled at. His later work years were spent doing security work for the Corps of Commissionaires — at Pearson airport, WSIB, and Warkworth Institution (a medium-security prison). Mick was always a dedicated employee, and took great satisfaction in the relationships he established with colleagues and inmates.
Per Mick’s expressed wishes, he has been cremated. Going completely against his expressed wishes, the family will NOT be gathering on the 401 in Brighton, ON, on a windy day to scatter his ashes so they blow out of town! Mick had a great sense of humour, as well as a tendency to dislike the places they lived, until they moved and then the previous place became the best place ever. Despite his soon-recanted dislike for Brighton, upon moving to Barrie, he did love the Brighton Legion. Over the years, Mick spent countless hours at Legions playing darts and later, Euchre, and was very proud of his 51-year membership with the Royal Canadian Legion. Even after vision issues got in the way of playing his beloved darts or cards — he still enjoyed a pint with friends at the “bulls@#t table.”
Appropriately, there will be a Celebration of Mick’s Life at the Brighton Legion on Saturday November 16th, 2024 from 2-4 pm. For more information and to RSVP, please contact a family member.
Donations in his name to Hospice Simcoe or Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated by the family.
