Son of the late Mary “Babs” and Michael Neville of Whitney Pier passed away peacefully Thursday, October 26, 2023, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 66 years, Janet; sons, Blair (Alaine), New Jersey and Kevin, Sydney; daughter, Wendy (Dr. Steve Saxon), Blacketts Lake; grandchildren, Ryan Neville, London, Kyle Neville, New Jersey, Lisa Lovell (Matt), Sydney and Jayce Neville, Sydney; and one great-grandchild, Maliyah Lovell, Sydney. Mel is also survived by his sister, Mary “Marnie” (Dan) Cash, Halifax and brother, Leonard “Lenny” (Grace), Kitchener, Ont. He is also remembered by his sister-in-law, Mary Crawley and brother-in-law, Pete Gillis.
Mel was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Neil and Gerard; and sister, Patsy Gillis.
Mel was born, raised and lived in Whitney Pier. He graduated from Sydney Academy in 1956 and was highly active in sports, participating in hockey, soccer and track. He was a member of the Holy Redeemer Midget team that won the Maritime Championship 1953-54. Although Mel’s choice of a hockey team was suspect, he was an avid fan of baseball and hockey. He ardently followed the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs. When asked to describe Mel, his friends used words like “involved” and deeply committed to everything he did.
For over 70 years, he engaged with various volunteer organizations. As a young man, he was actively involved with the Kinsmen Club and the Whitney Pier Development Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Whitney Pier Credit Union and served more than 20 years on the Cape Breton SPCA, many years as chairman of the board.
Mel worked more than 40 years with the Sydney Steel Corp., retiring in 1993 as Chief Purchasing Agent.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care Team for their care during his final days. They would also like to thank the VON for their kind and dedicated care over many months. Special thanks to Dr. Greg Myatt, Janice and all his dedicated staff for the care and support they provided during Mel’s long illness.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Following Mel’s wishes, he was cremated and details of the service will be determined at a later date.
