Obituary
Dorothy “Dot” Violet Blades
May 22, 1947 – August 26, 2024
SANDY POINT – It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy “Dot” Violet (Brown) Blades, beloved wife, mother, aunt and friend on Monday, August 26, 2024 at the QEII – Halifax Infirmary.
Born in Yarmouth on May 22, 1947 and raised in Port La Tour, Dot was a long-time resident of Sandy Point, Shelburne County. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Mabel (Nickerson) Brown.
Family meant the world to Dot. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 55 years, Edsel Blades, Sandy Point, and her son(s), Calvin Blades (the apple of her eye) and his husband, Greg Guy, Bedford, N.S., her sister-in-law Joan Brown and nephew Bobby Brown, Kingston, N.S., several nieces and nephews and her fur babies, Bailey and the “Shelburne brood” – the best fed cats in the county.
Throughout her life, she became known as a great cook, having worked in various Shelburne kitchens including Bruce’s Wharf Pub & Grill, Mary’s Abide-A-While Home, and at Seacoast Film Production Studios, cooking up a storm for the cast and crew of films like the guest production, Moby Dick. After working outside the home, Dot and Edsel became caregivers to many seniors in Shelburne County. They opened their home and provided great care, comfort and love to their guests.
Dot treasured time spent with family and friends. She made time for good conversation, and those exchanges were always guaranteed to include some great stories and loads of laughter, often told over her home-cooked, delicious meals.
In her early years, she was a Sunday school teacher in Upper Port La Tour. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63, and was a lioness of the Shelburne & District Lions Club.
She enjoyed camping adventures, listening to music (especially “old-time favourites”), dancing, watching curling, playing darts and participating in the neighbourhood’s Nora and Gene Blades Memorial Washer Toss Tournament. When the mackerel started running each year, you would see Dot heading to the wharf to catch a fresh, tasty treat for her feline friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother John “Jackie” Brown, aunts Margaret Donald and Myrtle Knowles, and her good friend Sheila Boutilier.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium Ltd. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2024 at Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 58 Bulkley Street, Shelburne, with Rev. Cindy Dunnett officiating. Reception to follow. A private burial will take place at a later date.
A special thank you to neighbours Wanda, Shawn and Hannah Buchanan, Linda and Milford Townsend, brother-in-law Jimmy Graham and Barb Burke, the local VON and the vascular and cardiology teams at the Halifax Infirmary for their care and support, especially during Dot’s recent illness.
Memorial donations may be made in Dot’s memory to the Shelburne branch of Nova Scotia SPCA.
