Darrol’s Obituary
Thurier, Darrol, CD2 – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Darrol Thurier peacefully at home on Sunday, December 17th 2023. Darrol was born in New Westminster, British Columbia. At 17 years old, he boarded a train bound for Nova Scotia to join the navy. During his 33 and a half year career he traveled to many ports around the world and worked with many NATO countries. He served aboard HMCS Terra Nova during the Persian Gulf War in 1990-1991. He was highly decorated with a CD with two clasps for over 33 years of service, Special Service Medal, Diamond Jubilee Medal and Kuwait Liberation Medal for serving in the Persian Gulf War. He retired from the navy in 1998 and worked with the Commissionaires until 2005. He was the Nova Scotia provincial representative for the Canadian Aboriginal Veterans Association. He learned of his heritage later in life and was proud to learn the culture. Darrol was avid fisherman and hunter in his younger years. He could often be found walking the shores of the Wallace River with a fly rod in hand, or tagging out during deer hunting season. He was most happy being around animals, he was often called the dog whisperer by friends. All creatures great and small often got an extra treat or ear scratch from Darrol. He will be missed by his dogs, Marble and Posh. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Lisa Thurier; sons, Bruce (Judy), Darren; daughters, Deneen (Don), Michele (Chris); stepdaughter, Nicole; grandchildren, Courtney, Hannah, Erin, Scott, Erica, Christopher, Olivia and Declan; along with 8 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; also brothers, Gary, Dana; sister, Karen; former spouse, Barbara. The family would like to thank the palliative care team at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, the oncology unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, and the RN’s, LPN’s and home care of the VON for their exceptional care, special mention to Elizabeth and Danielle. Arrangements are in the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium. As per his wishes there will be no service and burial will take place in the spring with a private family only graveside service. Donations can be made to Canadian Cancer society or LA Animal Shelter in Amherst.
