Petronella “Nellie” Verschuren Obituary
It is with great sadness, we the family, announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother (Oma) and sister, Nellie Verschuren, on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the Northside Community Guest Home, at the age of 92.
Born in Oploo, Holland on May 18, 1932, Nellie was the daughter of the late Arnoldus and Theadora (Raaymakers) Lenkens.
After emigrating from Holland to North Sydney with her husband Cornelius, they operated the well-known family farm, Hilltop Farm, for over fifty years. Nellie enjoyed gardening, was an avid card player, but most of all she enjoyed entertaining family and friends at her home.
Nellie is survived by her children; Thea (Ken) Collier, Arnie (Kim), Frank (Paula), Carol Anne Verschuren, all of North Sydney, Angela MacDonald, Sydney Mines and Patricia Patey, Dryden, ON. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Chris (Danielle) Collier, Russell MacDonald, Shannon (Paul) Laderoute , Steven (Becky) Patey, Alecia Verschuren, Mitchell (Kristi) Verschuren; great-grandchildren Emery, Nick, Brody, Sadie, Leo and Olivia. Nellie is also survived by her brother Harry (Anne) Lenkens, Holland, her sister Truus Jans, Holland, sister-in-law Colby Verschuren and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and Holland.
Besides her parents, Nellie was predeceased by her husband Cornelius, brother Jan (Truus) Lenkens, sister Koos (Jan) Jans, son-in-law Arnold MacDonald and brother-in-law Gerritt Jans.
Visitation for Nellie will be from 6-9 pm, Monday, September 23, 2024, at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, September 24, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Cancer Society, Palliative Care, the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.
