Mike’s Obituary
After a long and very happy marriage, many fond and shared memories, I announce the peaceful passing of my best friend, soulmate and loving husband of 56 years, Michael Richard Upward, Thursday, December 14, 2023 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Mike was born in Blackburn, England on May 2, 1943, during WWII. Mike liked to joke that it was so noisy in Blackburn in the “War Days” he decided to move to the peace and quiet of Newfoundland with his parents, Pearce and Ida and younger brother, Bruce. His brother, Roger and sister, Beverly, were born after their arrival in Newfoundland.
Mike grew up in Cormack, NL about 50 miles from Corner Brook and lived there from 1947 to 1960 without power, telephone, or electricity. He grew up in the company of many war brides brought back from Great Britain and many war veterans.
After high school graduation, Mike spent a tour with the RCN for 3 years and then with the RCAF for 5 years. After leaving the forces he ended up in Kentville, NS where Mike met the love of his life, his forever sweetheart, Judith Sheridan, whom he married in 1968. They moved to Saint John, NB in 1970. Mike was known from Moncton to Fredericton and back to Saint John, for nearly 40 years as “Mr. Football” in the gold shorts, mid-November on the football field, coaching the sport we were fully dedicated to. In 2008, Mike and Judy returned to Nova scotia to purchase Judy’s family homestead, where they have resided ever since. Mike and Judy spent 47 years coaching their favorite sports; players from Atom, Peewee, Bantom, High School and University, fielding Simonds’s High School football as Head Coach for nearly 20 years, where both, Mike and Judy’s hearts will always be listening to “Thunderstruck with 50 or so high school football players. Next Mike started the 1St ever UNB SJ Wolves University team, with over 100 young men trying out for positions. After moving back to Nova Scotia, Mike started Western Valley Wings Football in 2010 in Middleton with teams in Atom, PeeWee and Bantom, over 120 players until his health declined in 2015 resulting in the program being cancelled.
He was predeceased by his mother, father; brothers, Bruce and Roger. Left to mourn my darling, the love of Mike’s life, Judith (nee Sheridan); sister, Beverly, and his beautiful Corgi, “Miss Hope”.
In keeping with Mike’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home; 398 Main St. 1-855-825-3448. The online guest book may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
