It is with great sadness that the family of Frederick Norman Hanhams, 88, of Lunenburg, announce his passing on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Harbour View Haven in Lunenburg.
Born in Belleoram, NL, he was a son of the late Levi and Jessica (Dominix) Hanhams.
Dad was born in Belleoram, Fortune Bay, NL. At the age of 16, he embarked on a career at sea that would continue for almost 50 years. This journey took him all over the world and on a variety of ships from oil tankers, supply ships and finally the freighters that plied the waters of the Great Lakes until his retirement in 2001. Nothing was more important to Dad than family. He was never happier than when the house was full of family and friends. He loved to sit back with a cold bottle of Schooner beer, have Newfie tunes playing, and a smile on his face as long as everyone around was having an enjoyable time.
Dad loved the simple things in life, and one of his proudest achievements was when someone would tell him what great workers his children were. He beamed even brighter when told his kids were a “good bunch.” Those things meant a lot to Dad, and he was a great role model to learn these virtues from. He always had a smile and never one to be judgmental; he was simply a good man.
Fred is survived by daughter, Mary (Dianne), Kingston; sons, Wally (Nancy), Yarmouth, Frank (Michelle), Oakhill, Harold (Tara), Bridgewater, Donnie (Karen), Bridgewater; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife Cass; sons Fred and Levi “Bub,” and brother, Levi.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A memorial service and interment will be held at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, or a charity of your choice.
