Barbara Kathleen Eye
1926-2024
Barbara Kathleen Eye,
98, of Kentville, formerly of Greenwich, passed away on Wednesday,
September 18, 2024, in Evergreen Home for Special Care. Born in
Wolfville, she was the daughter of the late George Leonard and Ethel
Murray (Pick) Eye.
Barbara grew up in
Wolfville, at the family farm on Eye Road. It was there she developed
her strong work ethic. She often said, “a job worth doing is
worth doing well.” She passed these values on to her nieces
and nephews, who would assist her with farm duties during their
visits.
She took her work
ethic and applied it to her schooling. After graduating from Wolfville
High School she moved to New Glasgow to attend Aberdeen Hospital
School of Nursing. There she worked and trained for three years,
graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1947. After travelling across the
country to take on positions at hospitals in Northern communities,
including Kirkland Lake, ON and Fairview, AB, she made her way back to
Nova Scotia where she spent the rest of her nursing career. She worked
at Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital, and then at Blanchard Fraser
Memorial Hospital from where she retired in 1989. She stayed in
contact with several of the nurses she worked with following her
retirement.
Kind and
compassionate, Barbara displayed the true qualities of a nurse. She
shared a special bond with her mother, Ethel, always enjoying each
other’s company and sharing many laughs. In
Ethel’s later years, Barbara took on the role of her
caregiver until her passing, a testament to the special bond they
shared.
Barbara cherished her
time spent with her many good friends over the years. She often shared
memories with her family of her adventures with a smile on her face.
Barbara was the sort of person who had no trouble expressing herself,
you always knew where you stood with her. She remained independent,
living in her own home until 2021, thanks to the help of family
(especially June, Barb and Debbie) and the VON.
Barbara had many
varied interests and hobbies. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers
and vegetables. Her friends and family often received the delicious
tomatoes she harvested. Barbara was a lover of music. She had a
beautiful voice and loved to sing. She taught herself to play the
guitar.
Barbara loved her
television programs and watched curling faithfully. In her younger
years she often curled when given the opportunity. Her favourite way
to spend her day; however, was reading. You could often find her
engrossed in a book, likely with one of her cats, whom she loved so
much, by her side. In addition to her books, Barbara made sure to read
the newspaper daily, front to back, and faithfully tackled the
cryptoquote, usually successfully.
Barbara loved spending
time with her family. In her younger years, summer days were often
spent on picnics and family reunions at Evangeline Beach. She enjoyed
capturing videos on her movie camera, especially of her nieces on
their pony. Together they shared laughs and delighted in watching it
play in reverse, making the pony appear to be running backwards. These
are among some of the many cherished memories Barbara’s
family holds dear to their hearts.
Barbara is survived by
her sister-in-law, Ferne Eye; as well as many nieces and nephews. In
addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Kenneth,
Basil, Victor (Ruth), Vernon (Margaret), Elliott (Dorothy) and Gerald
(Ferne); and sisters, Ethel “Joyce” (Allan) and
Theda (Avon).
There will be a
graveside service in Willow Bank Cemetery, Wolfville at 11:00 a. m. on
Thursday, October 3, 2024. Donations in memory may be made to VON
Canada or a charity of your choice. Cremation arrangements have been
entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
