Obituary of Donald Roy Selig
SELIG, Donald Roy “Don” – Age 87, of Bridgewater, passed away February 1st, 2024, in South Shore Regional Hospital. Born in Brookfield Mines, Queens Co., N.S., he was the son of the late Fred Selig and Irlean (Mailman) Selig.
Don retired in 1991 from the Halifax Herald Ltd., after 37 years of service. Don held many positions with the firm, including Circulation Manager, and knew the Newspaper business very well. He spent many vacations in the Bahamas and Florida before retirement, and after retiring he spent winters in Florida and travelled extensively by bus and car throughout the USA and Canada. Don enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing – which he did for most of his life. Don was a member of the Olde Town Golf Course and a member of the Micmac Rod and Gun Club where he pursued his sports. Don was also a member of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Don joined the Kinsmen Club in 1962 and was a member of the Bridgewater and Halifax Clubs, and currently belonged to the Bridgewater K-40 Club. He was also made a life member of the Canadian Association of Kinsmen Clubs in 1978. Don also belonged to the Masonic Order, member of the Acacia Lodge #39, Bridgewater, 32-degree Scottish Rite, and a member of the Philae Temple, Halifax, as a shiner. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, Pearl Chapter #71, Caledonia. He was a recipient of his 65-year jewel in the Masonic Order in January 2024.
He is survived by his second wife Patricia (Canning); his three sons, Kevin (Margaret), Yarmouth, Glen (Dorothy), Beaverbank, and Bradley (Kerry), Halifax; grandchildren, Rachel and Mykola, Yarmouth, Joshua, Emma, and Matthew, Beaverbank, Austin and Luke, Halifax. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Carolyn Holdright, Caledonia, Carl Canning (Roxanne), Caledonia, and Laurie Canning (Nikki) of Caledonia; step-Grandchildren, Jarred, Devon, and Ben Holdright, Dillion and Dana Canning, and Liam and Riley Canning; brothers, Carl (Freda), Bridgewater, Robert, Bridgewater, Clary (Beverley), Newcombville; sisters, Joan Watts, Northbrookfiled, Peggy (Phillip) Smith, Ninevah; brother-in-law, Marty Blackburn; four step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Smith; sisters, Pauline Koba and Dianne Blackburn; and sister-in-law, Shirley Ducalfe.
Visitation will be held 6:30 P.M. – 9 P.M., Thursday February 8th, 2024, with a Masonic Service beginning at 6:30 P.M., Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 P.M., Friday February 9th, 2024, in Bridgewater Baptist Church, with Rev. Simon Davis officiating. A private family interment will be held immeadiatley following the memorial service, with a public reception to follow the memorial service at Bridgewater Baptist Church, to share memories and condolences with the family. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s memory can be made to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater, or the Health Foundation of The South Shore.
