Obituary of David Alexander Hyson
I am sad to say that the kindest man I know died at home on July 3, 2024. Always a direct man, he didn’t like the term “passed away.”
David Alexander Hyson was also known as Coach Dave to many, many badminton players. He always enjoyed the sport so much and played from grade 8 on until he couldn’t play anymore. He also loved coaching, which he started back when his stepson Sam was in elementary school. He was involved right up until the end of this season.
I like to say that Dave coached life as much as he coached badminton. He was interested in the people who came into the club. He got to know them and what made them tick. He was a guide to many as they grew into adulthood and kept in touch as long as the “kids” were interested. Another thing Dave loved was Milford House. It was the place he looked forward to going to several times a year. He was well loved by the staff and made great friends with some of the guests. We planned our time there to coincide with when our friends would be there.
Funny, kind, charismatic, he had a way with people and was able to make them relax and feel comfortable. He loved to joke and tease. He talked to you with warmth and attention, using what I’ve heard someone call “that wonderful radio voice.”
Even in his last days, a nurse made a comment on his beautiful deep voice. Most people aren’t aware that he also had a wonderful singing voice and would listen to different singers over and over until he got the sound just right and sing the night away. He could hold his own with KD Lang’s Hallelujah, lasting just as long and beautifully as she does. (Yes, I know it’s Leonard Cohen’s song.)
He was a funny man, a good man, a caring man, my best friend, my inspiration and I will miss him for the rest of my life.
Dave leaves behind his common-law wife Danielle; his sister, Joan Hyson; stepson, Sam Smith; Sam’s partner, Michelle Meister and their unborn baby; nephews, Peter, Justin and his family, Ashleigh, Colton, Daxton and Isla; niece Jennifer, her husband Alex and their son Finnley; sister-in-law Janeen.
We will forever cherish the time we spent with Dave. Family and friends alike will miss his wit and wisdom. He was truly one of a kind. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater where online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com
