It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of
Madeline Martha Ryan, age 90, of Baddeck,
NS, formerly of Amherst, NS. Madeline passed away peacefully on
Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at the Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck with
family by her side.
Born in St. John’s NFLD, Madeline was a daughter of
the late Michael and Clara (Strapp) Murphy.
Madeline was very active in her community of
Amherst. She was a past president of the St. Charles (later
Holy Family) Catholic Women’s League. She was also
a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society of Holy Family
Parish. She was a member of the I.O.D.E as well as a member
of the Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. Originally a teacher, in
later life she went back to school and became a bookkeeper working for
both the Cumberland Catholic Pastoral Center as well as for her
husband Dr. Edmond Ryan in this capacity. Madeline was an avid reader
and also enjoyed writing her own stories. She was a great lover of
music and could frequently be seen enjoying a good book with music
playing gently in the background.
Madeline is survived by her daughter, Margaret
“Peggy” (Ron) Joiner, Truro, Michelle (Ottawa) and Conor
(Jean Ann), Sydney, N.S. Grandchildren, Meghan, Aislinn and
Braeden Joiner as well as Lenayah and Michaela Ryan as well as a Great
Granddaughter Olivia. She is also survived by sister-in-law
Ila Murphy and Theresa Ryan as well as special niece Anne Murphy
(Chester) and many other nieces and nephews in both Canada and
Ireland.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Dr.
Edmond Ryan as well as siblings, Gerald Murphy, Michael Murphy,
Margaret Murphy, Marion (Murphy) McCarthy, and Patrick
Murphy. She is also predeceased by brother in laws Rev.
Michael Ryan, James Ryan, Nicholas Ryan, and Kevin McCarthy as well as
sister in laws Joan Ryan and Catherine Murphy.
Arrangements are under the care and supervision of the
Jones Family Funeral Centre, 70 Church
Street, Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visitation will take place
Thursday, May 30th,
2024 from 2PM-4PM and 6PM-8PM. A funeral mass will be held on Friday,
May 31st, 2024 at
11:00am at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow
in the St. Charles Nativity Cemetery.
Donations in Madeline’s memory may be made to the
St. Vincent De Paul Society of Holy Family Parish in Amherst,
NS.
