James (Jim) Beck
1932-2024
James Martin Beck, fondly known as Jim was born on October
13th, 1932, in Brookvale NB, and died at the Jordan Lifecare Centre on
November 18th, 2024. Jim was the son of Martin and Mary Beck
(Hutchins). He was an avid hunter, millworker, foreman, woodsman, and
guide spending his life in the outdoors. Often, if he needed equipment
or tools he built them. He also was an amateur gunsmith and made
numerous hunting knives and cases – primarily as gifts. Jim had an
incredibly strong work ethic, and was the definition of a helpful
neighbor. He had a strong sense of community, and could be found with
tractors moving houses, plowing gardens, and venturing into the woods
for firewood, deer, or the occasional moose. Venison was rarely in
short supply. Jim loved politics and was involved at the grass roots
level in the area. There was no question regarding his political
leanings. He also loved to tell stories and had lots of them. From
thistles up through the outhouse at school, to pranks at work, and
endless hunting stories. They were entertaining and gave his friends
and family a glimpse into his life.
Jim and Loretta met in 1952. They started dating in 1953. Jim
rented the family farm in 1955 and they married in 1956. They lived on
the farm together until he was moved into the Green Meadows facility
in July of 2023. Jim had a variety of jobs related to lumbering,
farming, and guiding. He worked for Blois Corey in lumbering for 23
years. Jim tried his hand at farming for several years before
returning to lumbering. Wilfred and Darell Bishop employed him at
Bishop Lumber for 27 years – the rest of his working life. Millwork
for him was not without its stressful moments, but he loved
it.
He will be missed by his loving wife of 68 years, Loretta
(Black): children Reid (Bev), Brent (Joanne), and April;
grandchildren; Stacey, Heather (Amanda), James, Dylan, Colleen, Niki,
and Alana; great grandchildren, Willow, Charlotte, Taylor, Ivy,
Isobel, Evan, Eveyln, Ottie, and Seth.
Survived by his sister Edith, and predeceased by daughter –
Joyce, siblings Dora, Beatrice, Iva, Walter, George, Ernest, Leslie,
Lola, and Shirley. In addition he will be missed by many friends and
family members from near and far.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Salisbury
Funeral Home, 506-372-4800, from where a Celebration of Life will be
held on November 22nd from 5 until 8pm. A time of remembrance and
sharing will be held at a later date.
