Obituary of Carol Anne McLeod
In loving memory of Carol Anne (Cushing) McLeod, a vibrant, loving, and kind wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose joie de vivre filled the room. Anne passed away September 13th, 2024 at Trillium Hospital, in Mississauga Ontario with her husband, Ralph, of 69 years, and her daughter Jamie by her side.
Born in Saint John New Brunswick on March 8th, 1934, Anne was the daughter of the late Wallie and Bessie (Wittrien) Cushing of Saint John, N.B. She is survived by her husband Ralph, her daughter Jamie (McLeod) DeWolf, grandchildren Travis and Clifford, and great-grandchildren, Kit, Darien, and Connor.
Anne attended Saint John Vocational School, and before Jamie was born, she worked as a stenographer and telephone operator at Hugh Carson & Co. and for the City of Saint John. She was a true role model in demonstrating strength of character as she devoted the rest of her married life to provide a warm, supportive and loving home to Ralph and Jamie as they moved to wherever Ralph’s banking career took him.
Making transitions-of-home happen between Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Bermuda, Montego Bay and Kingston Jamaica, she made it a priority to ensure that Ralph and Jamie were always settled into new environments both at work and at school. She had a huge capacity for kindness and there was never any question that she always put her family first.
Some of Anne’s fondest memories were of the time they spent in Kingston, Jamaica, in the late sixties climbing Blue Mountain, rafting on the Rio Grande, chasing crabs on the beach at night, playing bridge, or providing a warm, hospitable home to entertain for either business or pleasure.
She had the DNA for creativity at her very core. With a keen eye for form and colour, when she was not packing and unpacking boxes, she expressed this creativity through her passion for gardening and flowers, oil and china painting, sewing and needlework. A wonderful cook (mostly of old family and Maritime recipes), she absolutely loved her kitchen, and always said that ‘Food is Love’. Her home and kitchen were her castle.
We will miss her deeply.
Many thanks to the staff at Trillium who took care to ensure that Anne passed from this life in a most dignified way, to the staff of Port Credit Residences and Care Partners who took such loving care of her on a daily basis, and to Dr. Louie Mavrogiannis who visited her weekly and supported both she, Ralph and Jamie until the end.
The family will receive relatives and friends for a time of visitation on October 13, 2024 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm at Clifden Manor, 62 Parks Street, Saint John, NB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dorothy Ley Hospice (dlhospice.org). Please place online condolences and remembrances at www.BrenansFH.com or www.skinnerandmiddlebrook.com.
