Obituary
In Loving Memory of John Tozer Emmerson
Beloved Husband, Father, Grampy, Uncle and Friend
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of a man who touched the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. John T. Emmerson, 97, of Moncton, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
Born in Dorchester, N.B., he was the son of the late Senator Henry R. Emmerson and Faulein (nee Price) Emmerson. John was the youngest of fourteen siblings. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by Henry, Charles (Yvonne), Faulein, Edwin, Helen, Emily (Stanley McBride), Richard (Margaret), Ruth (Donald Chapman), Barbara (Keith Dobson), Bertram, Margaret (Edward Neve), Marion and Eunice (Allen Bishop). John had a deep connection to his roots in Dorchester (NB) and cherished the memories of his early years on the shores of the Bay of Fundy. His stories of adventures, family dinners around the dining room table and his days on his CCM bicycle were shared with pride.
John’s professional career spanned decades. He began as a Manufacturer’s Agent for Northern Electric and Marlite Inc., and then took his talents to entrepreneurship, starting his own business – Emmersales Ltd. His career took him to all corners of the three Maritime provinces where he always had open invitations for a meal, a cup of tea, or a room for the night, from colleagues and family members alike. Upon retirement, John joined the team at Walmart, where he greeted thousands of customers, young and old, for over 20 years, before finally retiring at the age of 92 (much to the disappointment of Walmart shoppers). He was a dedicated and faithful member of First Baptist Church, Moncton, where he served as a member of the Deacon’s Board and the Board of Trustees. On most Sundays, John could be found seated in the front pew with a suit-pocket full of unwrapped hard candy that he shared with all who would dare. When not working, John had a keen interest in reading and doing word search puzzles, while following Canadian and US politics on a daily basis. But his biggest passion came through in his dedication to his family. He was a wonderful and devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family dearly.
He was a man of wisdom, always ready with a kind word of advice, a comforting smile, or a little ditty. His love for his children and grandchildren was endless, and he embraced every moment with them. Whether it was sharing stories or simply listening to the stories of others, his interest in the lives of others (from close family to strangers) was apparent for all to see. John touched the lives of so many through his kindness, generosity, and the enduring friendships he built over the years. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will be cherished for generations to come.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 72 years, Chrystal (nee Smith) Emmerson; his children Catherine Emmerson of Torrance, CA., Henry Emmerson (Barbara Miller) of Waterloo, ON, and Marilyn McCarthy (Rob) of St. Louis, MO.; his two adored granddaughters, Lauren and Lindsay McCarthy of St. Louis, MO; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, colleagues, and friends.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Moncton Hospital. Thank you to Dr. Leonard, Dr. Allanach and Janelle Doucet for your care and support that enabled a positive quality of life over the years. We appreciate every member of the medical, nursing, wound care, and rehab team from Moncton’s Extramural office for being a valued healthcare partner. A very special thank you to Kelly Ogilvy, and Dow Home Care. The consistent, professional, and compassionate way you provided care will never be forgotten.
A Service to Celebrate and Honour John’s life will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton, N.B. (506-858-1995) on Saturday, November 18, 2023, beginning at 1:00 PM, to be followed immediately by a reception.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers and in loving memory of John, memorial donations to The Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation or First Baptist Church, Moncton, would be appreciated. Online condolences for the family can be shared on the Fergusons Funeral Home Facebook Page. The livestream funeral service may be viewed on John’s obituary page at
