Obituary
“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings **”
Francis Joseph Orman (Frank/General Jim) passed away peacefully October 22, 2023, at Albert House Hospice in Moncton.
Born in Halifax in 1931 to John and Jeanette Orman, Frank was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1948 to 1976. After retiring from the RCAF, he served as manager of the Moncton Press Club from 1976 to 1996.
Frank was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been predeceased by brother Tom and sisters Teresa and Margaret. He was predeceased as well by son David and granddaughter, Samantha, both in infancy.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mary Janet, and their children Jim (Susan) of Edmonton, Alberta; Bryan of Moncton, New Brunswick; Michael of Edmonton, Alberta; Suzanne (David) of Moncton, New Brunswick; Sharon (Kenneth) of Moncton, New Brunswick; Shelley (Mike) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; and seven grandchildren – Ian, Olivia, Amber, Christian, Colin, Jacqueline and Nicholas, as well as great-grandchildren Haley, Brenden, Aiden, Julie, Ben and Lillian. Frank is also survived by the children of his brother, Tom, and their families.
Frank retained a sharp mind to the end, often regaling family with fascinating stories of Halifax during WWII and his time as a youngster delivering telegraphs to warship captains in the middle of the harbour or to war-impacted families in the city. Frank was a lifelong sports fan, participating in athletic activities in his younger years. At 92, he could still recount watching the 1947 Halifax St. Mary’s Junior Hockey team, naming players like Hugh Campbell, Gummy Gilfoy and Bert Hirschfeld. The music of the 40s and 50s was his favourite listen and he had the great fortune of seeing Ella Fitzgerald perform in Montreal during the late 40s.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff (“his girls”) of Albert House Hospice for the care provided in our father’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice New Brunswick or the IWK Children’s Hospital would be appreciated. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 26, 2023 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (506-858-1995). Interment to follow at a later date.
“And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.”
